    First, I'd like to introduce my self. My name is Chris and I live in Salt Lake City, however, I'm from the south (Mississippi). I'm as new as they come to the atv world. I have friends that ride new quads and seeing how I didn't want to spend "thousands" on a bike, I dedicded to find something a bit more affordable. I found an 84 200s for $425. It started on the second pull, idled okay, but sputtered a little when holding the throttle steady an any speed. For $400 bucks to get up over the dunes where my friends are, I bought this to be a camping atv...nothing serious, just to ride occasionally and not be left out. As soon as we got home, unloaded it off the truck, it would NOT start. Thought it was something electrical and spent the next 3 days cleaning and checking electrical connections...finally i bought an 18mm deep socket so i can pull the plug. The gap was too large so I replaced the plug with a new one. It fired right up, but still had the sputtering throught the throttle range. I took the plug out after only a minute of running and it was black as could be. I took the carb out, cleaned it with carb cleaner and I set the pilot screw to the factory default...and it fired right up and sounded 100% better. but it would not stay at idle...I tried to raise the idle with the throttle stop screw but that didn't work, the engine died and now it won't start. Oh, I have a Honda Service Manual for 84-86.

    Any suggestions?

    i would say take the carb off the trike and tare it down and clean it and its jets. all you need to do is take the air box hose off, unscrew the slide (on top of the carb), then unscrew 2 10mm nuts that hold it to the intake manifold. then take the bottom off the carb. use carb and choke cleaner.


    by the way welcome to 3ww . if we cant help you do something nobody can. this rite now the number 1 trike site.

    I heard that a 200X carb will bolt on and that it's a good performance modification for the 200S.
    I'm back in the USSR...

    yup that is a true rumor. they bolt rite up with no mounting problems at all. you may have to mess with jetting though.

    but i dont think it will help allot with a stock exhaust. he just wants a stock trike from what i gather from his post.

    Thanx for the replies. I had the carb out yesterday and sprayed it out, but I didn't open it up to clean the jets. Thats what I'll do today after work. If this doesn't work, I'll buy a carb rebuild kit.

    If not, where do you recommend?

    no i have not bought from them. i buy either threw a place here in town or denniskirk.com. if its a oem carb i have used but still good jets. just pay shipping and you can have them. save ya 20.00 bux for a rebuild kit.

    Last night I had the carb apart and i was trying to imagine how the float worked, and I noticed it didn't move from the valve seat except a tiny amount at max rotation. Cleaned all the jets and put everything back as it was and the bike fired right up...sounded real good! I let it idle for a few minutes and took it around the block. Ran much better...still a little sputtering but sooo much better. I get back to the house and it idles rough and dies...I couldn't get it started. Both times i fired the engine without the filter box cover. Both times the carb was cleaned/drained and the engine fired right up. I was thinking it had something to do with my carb float. I looked online and saw my float valve "clip" was missing.

    Both times I fired the engine without the filter box cover, and I need a new filter, but could the float valve "clip" be causing my problem?
    Does this clip come in a rebuild kit?

    Could someone please explain the function of the float and its mechanics?

    Float Spring ?? I guesss I'm confused,You mean on the needle at the seat where it hooks onto the tab of the float.Personally it sound's too me like your slow jet on the bottom is assembled wrong.Make sure you have a washer ,baby o-rong and spring in there.And check the float height ,with a mic..Refer to your manual for height ,I believe it's 14MM.And just get the carb kit and save tha agrivation..Just my 2 cents..

    Here's what I'm missing.

    I was looking at the diagram and just as you mentioned, I didn't see the washer and o-ring you were referring to when i took the carb apart.

    I also circled the little "clip" I am missing that is attached to the float.

    Well if you don't have the o-ring ,spring and washer in the slow jet which you have pictured ,than you have problem's,for sure.I thought that's what it sounded like.And on the needle float,I can't remember if on the 200s,it fit's in the float groove's(tab on float), for placement or has the wire holder.I think the needle just fit's into the groove's on the float.Anyway's you for sure need a carb kit.Get that and you'll be in business.When you get it let me know if I can help..

    Once again, I took the carb apart and found the spring, washer and o-ring on the pilot screw. Based on my diagram, I have everything. I disassembled all the jets and cleaned everything once again. The engine failed to fire. I was baffled, so I decided to pull the plug. Once again there was plenty of black soot all over the plug...I cleaned/scrubbed all the carbon off the spark plug. Wouldn't you know, it fired right up and sounded darn good. Now that I think of it, every time it fired the plug was pulled and cleaned. I suppose the plug is becoming fouled after a few minutes of riding.

    I checked the oil and noticed it was a bit high and I drained the extra oil out. After I did this I was able to ride the bike for 10 minutes. It was getting late and I decided to quit for the day. Today after work, I'll check the plug once again, but until then:

    What would cause spark plug fouling?
    My valves make a bit of noise, but I figured the 23 year old bike wouldn't be too quiet.
    Could oil blow-by cause my plug to foul after only a few minutes of riding?
    What else should I be looking for?

    Thanks again for all the replies, I can't wait to get this bike up and running for the weekend!
