    84 Tecate Ricky Stator

    The tecate was out of service for about three weeks, went to take it for a weekend trip and the stator took a junk on me in the first five minutes on the first day. Had to ride the dirt bike for the rest of the weekend. Just recieved my new ricky stator and installed it into the tecate. (using the stock flywheel) I now have spark and she runs. Here is my problem it now feels rpmy. It seems like it revs out way to fast. Would the stator make any difference in that. I got the bike about two years and I opened the top end to see how it was and it was ported with a new sleeve and a good looking piston, and it had an aftermarket pipe on it. When I got it running I thought it ran great, but maybe the spark was always weak from the start and now that I have it fixed it is just a gearing issue (I put stock gearing on the bike). Just wondering if the stator could have any affect on the rpms. Thanks Joel

    Do you know if its a K.X. cylinder or the stock one? I can tell you this, my 85 has a cylinder off of a K.X. with the same set up as you have and it is real PIPEY! It only runs strong way up in the r.p.m.s while my stocker is happy cruising around the yard like a trail bike. Maybe your bike has been starving for juice for a while?

    When I first got the bike I asked on here how to tell if it was a KX or not, and by what I was told I thought it wasn't. At one time I think this bike was raced, the original pipe that was on it was like a cone style pipe (it was all bent up so I junked it), the first time I had it apart I found the port job, it had a homemade reed spacer, and custom air intake, and the lighting coil on the stator was removed. After I put it back together the first time I thought it really moved. You could feel it when it got on the pipe. Every shift from a dead stop you could feel it getting stronger. It felt like that until the stator went bad. It is still strong all over, but it feels like I need another two gears. I am through the gears in about two seconds, and it doesn't have the pull it use to. Sounds like it is way to high in the rpms. Thanks Joel

    Joel, does it break up at all on top end. I mean can you hear/feel the bike stutter at all?

    I know I have a RickeyStator system here and it will not set right on the timing and it breaks up in the upper rpm. (I think it may have bad coils, anyone want it for $125 plus shipping? the flywheel is worth that alone.)


    The Tecate, if you run anything smaller then a 22 inch rear tire will need a front sprocket change or it will run out of gear real fast.

    You have 18 inch trekkers? I'd suggest a 14/36 combo from Sprocket Specialist's. Maybe even a 15 if you have the room to really open it up all the time.

    I run 14/38 on my modded 250 and it pulls every bit of it.

    General for every 2 inches of tire lost you add 1 tooth to the front sprocket or remove two at the rear sprocket.

    yeah i have a set of hoosiers that are 18's and a set of itp holeshots that are 22's the hoosiers with a gear set up 14-36 runs threw quick and the itps with a gearing of 14-38 pulls all threw the band nice faster to,love then t3's''

    In my pic yes they are 18 on there, I put those on when we do trail riding in the woods, but I have a set of 22 on there right now. That would be the best way to explain it, it feels like the first time I put the set of 18s on without the gear chage. When I put the 18s on, I go 14/38 also. It doesn't break up at the top end, and I don't want to hold it there to long because it seems like it is screaming. Thats the way this t3 use to be, I had to sit on the gas tank to keep her down when I got on it in the powerband. Found the rubber O-ring was blown out at the cylinder and pipe, and it did back fire when the stator went out, anyway I may have broke a reed and that is affecting it. Thanks for all the Help

    Have you checked the timing with a light?? NEVER trust the timing marks on aftermarket stators.

    Yeah I'm willing to bet if you had replaced the coils on your stock stator you'd be back to normal. OEM is best.
