Ready to run? '82 ATC 250r

I bought a non-running '82 ATC 250r and have slowly been acquiring parts for it. I want to start it up but there are a few things I have to ask first.

There was no oil in the bike but everything inside looked okay. I was wondering about the clutch, though. When I pull in the clutch lever it will stay in gear. Is this just because the oil hasn't circulated through the plates yet. I can pull on the gear shifter and can hear it click through all the gears but when I pull in the clutch lever it wont go into neutral.

I took the head off and looked at it. There was some minor pitting but it seemed fine. The previous owner sold it to me for 300$ because it didn't run. I found out exactly why it didn't run, though. He got a little too crazy with a gasket scraper (put a new head gasket in) and he put some minor scratches in the jug. I didn't think that it needed to be decked so I got some high temp silicone gasket maker and then threw the headgasket on.

I took the right sidecover off and turned the thingy (No clue what it is) I still had the head off. The piston moved up and down nice and cleanly and there were no scratches in cylinder.

Then just for kicks, i put the piston to the top of the stroke and poured a little bit of oil around it to see if the oil would leak down into the cylinder past the ring. Nope its okay.

The electrical is great. I took the plug out and left it attached to the coil and kicked it over and I saw a nice blue spark. (I used vice grips on the kickstart shaft. EEK.) Everything turned out okay

I just ordered my kickstarter off of ebay. Once I get it do you think I'd be okay to try to fire this puppy up? I don't know what else I might be missing. I really hope it will run with no problems. I have alot more work on it still.

    Think its ready to run?

Sounds like the clutch needs an adjustment.

You should pick yourself up a manual. You can get one here:

If its all lubed up, and has fuel, fire it up.

Good luck, and welcome to 3WW!

put some fresh bellray gearsaver oil for the trans, and get some quality 2 stroke oil, amsoil dominator or castor927 mix it 32:1 (20oz per 5 gallons) with good 93 octane gas, clean the carbs, and hook everything up, keep it turned off and kick it over about 20 times then tuen it on and kick it runnin!!

if you need to let the clutch plates soak add the oil to the tans then tip the bike on the left side and leave it like that over night

it may need to run to free up everything with the clutch, I jsut got done with a blaster for a freind and the clutch was acting like that but it was dry for to long and it took a good overnight soaking to make it work well, now its fine.

good luck homie and post a few pics!
