New guy needing help with ATC 500R

Ok, as you realize Im new to the site. My name is Bryan and I currently ride a 2003 KX 250 and I have now been bitten by the 3 wheeler bug. I have done some research and have decided to build a ATC 500R. I'm going to use a ATC 250 frame but would like to know what the ideal year for the frame would be.

85 or 86. I would do your research on this one, chances are you will not be happy with it when you are done. If you want to build a trike with big balls you should think about a hybrid. Not to shut it down but they always seem to vibrate way to much.

If your going to do this then search the forums and you will find a few ways to go about it. Personally I think building a new lower engine cradle is the best way to put that motor in.

Research this, make sure the frame is braced and slug the joins in the frame where possible.

I know a few people on here with atc500's and they have no complaints about vibration. Its only slightly worse than a 250r. Welcome to the site bud. I would definately build one. PM 3leggedogg. He built the ultimate trail 500r. If seen it and rode it. Very impressive and reliable.

I agree totally about the vibration. My KX500 Tecate vibrates about the same as my non-counterbalanced 250 Tecate motor. I know after I get the crank trued and welded it will be much better.

You liquid 250R riders are too babied with your fancy counterbalancer. LOL *jk

I have one, and the vibration isnt bad. The way to go is cut out the cradle and build a new one, after seeing it done to 3legged and with the help of some other members like jason hall, i did the same. You will need a tubing bender to make the new cradle, and it was kinda of a pain in the ass to make, atleast it was for me. I think i scrapped like 4 sets until i got 2 that were right. look in the archives, 3 legged has a good thread on it, theres also pictures of mine in a few of my threads also. I love my 500, tons of power, its reliable and and hauls ass.

Forgot to mention my one complaint with it, i cant kick start it. Its not that i cant kick it, i just dont think that i get enough throw out of the kicker in the atc frame, so i pop start it usually.

Try taking off your kicker and rotating it further ahead on the splines to get the extra throw.

*Was just thinking, all I had to do to put the KX5 in my 85 Tecate was splice in the KX 500 engine cradle, could you do the same with the CR500 frame section??

    Something to ponder anyhow.

WRONG ANSWER!!!! IF you don't have one please keep OPINION out of this,,, i HAVE A ATC500R made out of a 250r chassis ,, been riding it for 5 years,, ask around , i have let several people ride it,,, not a single person has thought it vibrated to much,,,

Mine doesn't vibrate much more than a tri-z

I rode my 500 today (3leggeddogs old one). It has no vibration problems what so ever. It is very smooth actually. However - I have not ridden it on any multiple hour rides yet.

I never thought about using the 500 cradle, maybe it would work, i just think it may be harder to make it fit right rather than make your own, has anyone explored this option? My doner bike had a trashed frame and i threw it out after i disassembled it so i really have no clue if it would work or not.
