starter/reduction gears same on 85 250sx and 86 250es?????

Have 86 big red 250cc with broken electric starter and or reduction gears. Will the parts from an 85 250sx fit??? Would hate to tear them both down and find out they are different.(they look the same) Thanks in advance for reply Chris

hmm i thought some had longer gears and some had shorter ? i kno my 85 ES i had that i traded to alan used 86 gears. with the 85 starter

The starter shaft is longer on '86 models by about 1/4" or so. I have 3 different sets of starter gears, they all look similar and have the same starter motor mesh and engine mesh but all 3 have different reductions in between. You really must keep complete sets together.
