Need Input on 250r Airfilter Options

For an '85 250r.
I have a K&N airfilter with Outerwears cover and its time for a new one.
Here comes the dumb question.
Where do I take the measurments off my current filter in order to order a correct new filter?

Also is everyone pleased with the k&n filter and outerwears?
Usually I just go stock, but I dont have the filter box or lid, so I can't.
Any suggestions for a filter?
I need something that can breathe real easy, but still protect.
Theres not that much air up here, so every little bit makes a huge, huge difference.

Nevermind.
I didn't know that the k&n's were reusable, washable, and re-oilable.
I thought that they were a paper based filter, but upon inspection of the k&n website I have learned otherwise; that they are made out of a cotton gauze type construction.
I'm still interested to know what everyone is running though.

I have a K&N and am about to switch to a UNI. My K&N has poor fitment and the outerwear has gone to crap on mine. I always find little pieces of dirt on the inside as well. Really not pleased. I will be happy when I go back to UNI filters

Can you run the Uni filters open without the stock airbox?
What about putting an outerwear cover over the Uni filter?

the uni is foam therefore no need for an air filter, however more restricted airflow. Try out a twin air if you want a good free flowing foam filter.

A uni filter with an open lid (on an occassion, not all the time because you will get it real dirty) will give you good power, a good filter and used by many plain and simple

I don't know if running one or not would make that much of a difference performance wise. I do believe that the easier the engine can breathe, the better performance you get from it though. However, somewhere along the line of owners, the airbox got taken off and replaced with an open k&n filter, so I don't really have the option of putting it back on without buying a new one.

ahhh that sucks.. Check ebay and grab another box, they aren't that much money.. It's far safer to run it with the box because you don't have it exposed to the elements as much and if you ride in sand it'll be better with the box.. Now if you get the box, you could run open lid ( I recommend for dragging) or make a custom opening.. Overall you want the lid on while you ride so you don't suck up crap
