BIG RED 250ES: EMGO oil filter won't fit!

I just bought this trike and wanted to change the oil/filter right off the bat.
Ordered a new EMGO oil filter for the 85-87 250ES.
Pulled the old one out, it looked original with all the stamping about the proper direction.
Put the new one in and the cover will not go on all the way...tried it 3-4 times. The back of the original filter has a round inset place that goes deeper than the EMGO.
Anyone else have this problem?? What did you do? Sure would like a new filter in there.

30-1759 should be on the box ,,the O ring not included
