I do have the manual and it says take it off. As much time i spent messin with it i could have already takin the clutch off.

That shaft has to be tipped to the right and turned 90 degrees or so so the latch gets behind the catch before it can go in completely. So... I'd say no it cannot but I don't have one in front of me this second to verify that....
