Question 85R Bearing carrier, NEED HELP! (pictures)

WOW, everybody who told me how crappy a job this is, you weren't kidding!

Anyway the rear end finally gave out on my R, lasted a while though guess I can't complain..... It gave out on the trails. My chain fell right off, it got jammed between the shifter and the frame. Thank christ it didn't crack my case, I was just putting. So after the nightmare of getting it home I inspected. The bearing on the sprocket side must have just self destructed!!! If you grabbed the grab bar the bike had about 1in of play on the sprocket side!!! Wonder why my chain came off?? lol

So I began tearing into it today, dreading this job because everybody who does it says it sucks, they're right. The axle pulled through while the carrier stayed in the swinger. I tapped it out with a dead blow . Next I got the distance collar out (round tube) and it had a broken ring on the sprocket side (the thick silver ring in the pics). i imagine that's the dust seal (#25). I never found the bearing on the sprocket side, it must have blown apart and just escaped out the side??

Here's the link to the bike bandit service manuel. The diagram is under swingarm...... http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit...0R/1985/173401

pretty sure I'll need two of part number 22 and 24. Might replace some other seals while I have it aprt too.

    all my parts

bearings and dust seal are still together on the brake side....

Somebody please tell me WTF this ring thing is? It obviously got raped because it was between the sprocket and swinger after the blowout. It's not in the service manual? It has some rubber on it if that helps....

sprocket side bearing and seal are out

Somebody who has done this before let me know what to do next and how to do it!!! BTW I soaked the brake side bearing and seal in PB blaster, just letting it sit before I pound it out....

    Thank you so much!!!! -Devin

    hey devin...

go buy one of those cheapo ebay carriers for 120 bucks...

Or if you must, use a punch to get it out from the other side, then buy a set of bearings and seals on ebay, and press them in.

Or take it to a shop to press in/out

that peice of rubber your holding is whats left of the bearign dust seal, as for this being a hard job...hardly, just a pain in the azz... dont really have to pres the bearings in you can use a large socket that fits the whole bearing race and tap it in, the bearing sets off ebay work fine and are reasonable, all my R's have them.

I replaced mine with a "factory second" RAD carrier from E-bay. I bet that will be a lot easier and not a whole bunch more expensive.

i think the metal ring is the inside of what was your seal. It looks like you gouged the carrier too from the pics, but should be ok. Had the same issue on my R this summer. Bought a loaded rad carrier and done with it. Just be happy your axle and brake hub came off easy.

You only need bearings and seals to replace as long as the center spacer is ok.

Get it together and PM me for a ride in Derry. I got alot of time on my hands these days.

I think I got mine from ebay seller: super charged connection. $135 The adjustment notches on mine could have been cut better, but it's perfectly workable. Just have to be careful not to let the tool slip when adjusting.

Check the OD of your axle where the bearing rides before you reinstall!

If the bearing exploded or you had been riding it for a while worn out chances are it did a number on the bearing surface. It would suck to get new bearings and a carrier, put it back together and still have it be sloppy as mofo cause the bearing surface on the axle is worn down.

If you decide to use your carrier and have a hard time getting that race out, use a dremel with a mini cut-off on the end if it and give it a couple slices, it will fall right out.

Ok i just looked on ebay and found the ones you guys are talking about, however then I remembered one critical thing. My bike is a 1985!!! the 86's were different right? Or can I just buy an 86 carrier and it will slide right into the 1985 swinger??

is there anything else I need to buy besides the 86 carrier to make this work?

    i second what edog said.

dont get the one like deepa talking about they are CAST alunimun. the Lonestar ones are billit and have the adjustments like the 86-89 trx250r ones.

lonestar makes a 85 specific model.

thats what i have on my 85 atc250r. it's still going strong after 10 years.
