which is more reliable, a 85-86 250R or a 85-86 350X?
which would win in a drag race and top speed, 85-86 250R or a 85-86 350X?
how many gears do the 85-86 250R's and 350X's have?
what tires would be best for mud and snow?
just curious.

350x is more reliable b/c its 4stroke, the 250r would smoke the 350x in a race, they both have 6 gears, and im not sure about the tires.

I don't know that much about the ATC's specifically but I'l have a bash...
The 350x should be more reliable being a 4 stroker, Ie not a stressed at a 2 stroke, the 250r should beat it in a drag, and I'd say 4 stroke in mud and snow because once a 2 stroke hits the pipe its off! you can feather the throttle on a 4 stroke and get lots of bottom end grunt.
Hope this helps.

The X would be more relaible but you would have no problems w/ the R over the years too...
If the 2 machines are stock, then the X would be about 1-2mph faster on top speed but the R would kill it in acceleraion. The best tires for the machines are the ITP Spidertracks. The work well and look great too.

crazy is right 250r's can be realy reliable but you have to do alot more maintince in changing the piston and rings before it blows and things like that
I dont accept the notion that 4 strokes are more reliable than two strokes. That fallacy grew from the fact that two stroke top ends wear out faster than 4 stroke top ends, (a hard core rider may only get a couple of years between bore jobs) but that hardly makes them less reliable. 4 strokes have a LOT more moving parts, and are not nearly as simple, and the argument could easily be made that two strokes are more reliable than 4 strokes.
2 strokes are not more reliable than 4 strokes that's just the way it is.

I am 31 years old and have been around 3 wheelers since i was 5 and I have yet to see an 350X (my dad bought one new in 86 my bro has one now that is stock and one of my Rs is stock) out run a 250R no matter how far you race, And I have rode 3 differnt 350X's and a lot of Rs and have never got the sense of speed on a 350X that I get on an R, I can give my bro a huge head start on his X and I will still blow by him sonner than later, so I would have to dispute the notion that a 350X is faster on top than an R.
One thing i've noticed that has not been brought up in this 2 stoke 4 stroke debate. Lets just say 4 strokes are a little more reliable than 2 stokes there is one thing that can not be argued 2 strokes cost much less to rebuild than 4 strokes and even the novice mechanic can rebuild his own 2 stroke wich in turn saves you even more money. I personaly would rather have a 2 stroke because i can do all the work myself and I have also had good engine life out of all my 2 strokes and any of you guys that have rode a 2 stroke have to admit nothing can give you the adrenaline rush stock for stock like a 2 stroke can.
You can say that again dude!(about the adrenaline 8) )

i bought my 85 ATC350X new and my 86 ATC250R and my 86 ATC350X new and still have them (except the 85 350X my wife just stole) and no way will a 350X beat a 250R acceleration or top speed
Hey MrATC, in your experience with your three, have you noticed any significant difference in reliability, maintenance, and cylinder life between the three, aside from those youd obviously see in whatever is ridden the most?
AMEN Mr ATC
