I admittedly know little about this particular bike, but would 1987 XR250R in total restored condition be worth even close to that? Most bikes from that time period in mint condition would not bring even half that, or is there something about this model that makes it a collectable of some sort?

no there is not tim,its a plain jane R250R,but the 9hundred something in just motor parts is for "high performance"parts, the total of $2500 would make it a 280cc and it would be MUCH more powerful than stock, heres the site i got the parts prices at www.xrsonly.com

    honda xr 250

The Honda XR's are very reliable and good all around bikes. From experience, I have ridden them, and have friends that still ride the older ones yet today. I think you should just fix it up, and sell it if you dont like it. If I was you, I would just try to find some cheaper (used) parts, or a good parts bike instead of buying new parts. Im sure some other dirtbike parts would work on it as well. My 2 centz

my personal and profesional opinion is it is not worth the money...why for 2500.00 you could find a 96 era XR400 that would out perform it and have much better suspension...as far as converting it to a trike well it can be done but most bike frames are to tall to be good trike frames
