    Got a 500!

Bought a 2000 500 Scrambler 4x4 for the GF to ride and broke the drive belt the first ride. Guy said it was worn. These things easy to install? What other things do I need to look for on this bike? What is important on maintenance and what's not? All you Polaris riders out there please give me your .02 worth. Thanks!

Haha not really helpful but TRUE.

I don't think the belt should be that much trouble to change, probably just a cover you unbolt and slide the new belt onto the clutches... don't tear the gasket!

Easy as can be to change. Take less then an hour if you have never done it. No gaskets to tear. The belt is kinda pricey at near $50. We have a 1998 500 4x4 scrambler and a broken belt is the only breakdown we have ever had in 4 years. Don't let these "if its not a honda its junk" guys scare you. When you change the belt I was also told to rub my hands against the sheeves to make sure no rocks have scratched them up.

Do you have to keep the tension on the belts adjusted? I have never messed with one, but I thought I heard that before.

Tension is not an issue. Just slip on the belt and the machine will do the rest. For a long time now I've been using Dayco belts. They cost less then OEM and last just as long.

Cool, like I said, I have never messed with one before. I thought someone told me that one time. I have looked at the Polaris quads at the local dealer and I like the big utility quads they make. They have nice sticker $$ too though. I haven't heard anything bad about the Polaris though.

Check out the front motor mount on it, they like to break, throws the motor/ clutch out of alignment and will cause premature belt failure/ creeping, run your hand on the sheaves of the primary, make sure its not grooved/crack', and change the oil regularly...or you will eat a cam,, polaris arnt bad machines, just got to stay on top of the maintnece or they turn into money pits. also if the belt came completly apart, make sure to shake the heck outa the intake tube for the cover to get all the little bits out.
