    200X Steering Head Bearings

Good evening all, I am currently working on the front end of my 200X. I got a set of All Balls steering head bearing and I ama little confused on the installation. It looks like each bearing (top and bottom) are made up of 3 pieces. They are a tapered housing, the bearing itself and what looks like a cap. My question is, in what order do they get installed? I think it looks like the cap would be on the top and bottom of each. I greatly appreciate all help and/or info.

    thanks in advance!

You must take out the old top race. And put the new one in from the kit.

Just to clarify, the race is the tapered piece that the bearing fits in? If that is the case I think I got it. I got the kit on ebay for about $30. Thanks again for all the help

Yes the race is the tapered piece. The old race is the piece you have to knock out and put the new one in. Basically its what the bearings ride on.

install one of the caps (flat side down) on the steering stem. Put a bearing, needles facing up, on the steering stem and get it into place.

Remove old races from frame and install new ones.

Put the stem up through the bottom race so the threaded part of the stem sticks above the frame. Put the other bearing, needles down, onto the stem and press it into the upper race. Put the cap (flat side up) over the bearing and install that funny looking nut over the top bearing/cap.

Then youre all set...dont forget to pack everything with grease.

OK I think I made a couple of strides last night but still have a couple questions. You guys will have to bear with me as this is my first complete restoration. I got the top race in but should the top of the race sit a little above the top of the frame? Next, on the bottom of the stem on top of the lower triple clame there is a washer tye thing. Does this have to come off before I install anything?

    Again, many thanks in advance

OK, on the bottom of the stem. Everything has to come off. THen that little cap/seal goes on, then the bearing.

The races should actually be 1/8 of an inch or so below the neck of the frame. I take a big socket and pound them in. Y ou took the old races out right?

Its not so much the clarity of the instructions that is the problem. My problem comes with the fact that there were no instructions at all

Well, yesterday was a bad day for the build. The silver lining, if there is one, is that I now know what needs to happen. The bad part is that i just ordered another set of steering head bearing and I screwed up the steering stem. So I am looking for a lower triple tree and the stem if anyone has one. It would also be VERY nice if that old bearing piece at the bottom of the stem was gone. That is how I messed the stem up, trying to get that off. Any help is always appreciated, let me know

    Thanks a million!!!!!!

That race is hard as a rock, if you use a dremel and slice it, then lay it on a steel vice or thick table and smash it with a big an or with a chisel. I have gotten many of them off that way. There are others that the stem presses out of and that makes it much easier to deal with. But, you have to have a press, dinkin around with screwdrivers etc is a waste of time. You may also try heating up the race if there is a way you can get at it with a punch and once you've heated it up.

If you don't have a dremel you can use a bench or handheld grinder, just get one area thin and have at it.

    Good luck
