Green and yellow affect lights, I believe. Tie the red and black together and see if you get spark.

i pulled out my trusty clymer manual and looked at the wiring diagram. on an 84, off is when black and green are connected. on is when red and yellow are connected. so i just disconnected the black and green from the ignition switch(which is in the off position), then attached the red and yellow together. they even made it easy to hotwire. all the wires were female except the yellow, which was male. so just disconnect all wires from ignition switch, then plug the yellow into the red - done!

The two larger wires are for running the regulator on the charging system. YOu short them to start the regulator and power up the vehicles lights and charging system. Put these on a switch so as to not discharge your battery when the bike isn't running.
