You guys ever rebuild your own cranks??

I REALLY hate paying for anything....

I have a press, a lathe and dial indicators. I even got a tip from a Honda mechanic about getting them true. He says "you gotta beat the hell outta them with a 2lb ..."

Any of you guys ever done any of this work or watched it happen?

No Banshee double cranks, LOL, Just simple single connecting rod cranks.

I can't balance them unless I figure out how thats done......

I have a couple junkers, I'm gonna see how bad they press apart

    I hate paying anything too....

Ive done this to a 125 2 stroke crank. You got to heat the crank and BEAT THE CRAP OUTTA IT!!! the only hard part is getting it trued.

I have been working on a KX250 crank lately... what a pain in the azz.. I am going to press mine back apart and start over with a crank pressing fixture I am borrowing... I dont recommend pressing without a fixture... Its nearly impossible to true when it is out of spec in 3 different directions because the pin presses crooked. And definately get a large brass or else the crank wheels will end up getting all dented up.. it takes a pretty good whack to get anything to move... The closer it is pressed to true, the easier it will be to get into shape

I've done a few myself. Here Is how I do them. First of course press the old rod off. Put the first crank half on the press with the shaft facing down. I made a hole In a thick piece of steel, that I lay on the press. Then what I do Is press the rod pin Into the first half all the way. Next put the other half of the crank on the press with the shaft facing down put the rod & bearing onto the pin hold the rod up against the top crank half. Use a socket to press on the pin Of the fully Installed side, push the Pin In about 1/4"- 1/2". Make sure the pin Is going In straight. I then check to see If the crank Is even close to true. If It's not, then tap It slightly with a rubber mallet or dead blow . Once you get It trued to you satifaction, then sit the crank back In the press with the unfinished side facing down & press on the PIN of the side that Is all the way on. If you lay a feeler gauge Inbetween the thruss washer & crank half & be real careful, you will have perfect side clearance on the rod.
