Please Help - Yamaha YTM200 Electrical question (Have pictures)

To all the smart people out there:

I have a 1984 Yamahauler. I posted in an earlier thread that my electric start clicks when the button is pushed. I tested the starter by "jumping it" and it works. So, the "thing" that is clicking is the black box in the picture. What is this black "thing" that has 4 male prongs (relay box)? In the second picture, I thought this was a solenoid but yamaha calls it a relay something. Any suggestions on how to get my electric starter to work.

    Thank you in advance.

Relay and solenoid are the same deal here. just replace it with a lawn mower solenoid or one off a ford pickup. Theyre cheap and itll fix the problem.

Test the battery for voltage. You need at least 12.5. to turn over the motor. Then try putting a charger on the battery turn it on then see if it starts.

Per Phil's suggestion, what type of lawn mower solenoid should I buy? If the clicking is coming from the black box, do you think the solenoid is bad? Anthing else I should check for?

FYI - Battery is brand new.

Any standard solenoid. If you have an old rider sitting around, just pull the solenoid off it. When you go to wire it up, there are 2 leads. one is power from the battery, the other is power to the starter. Then youll have a small wire. Touch the small wire to the positive on the battery to turn the starter over.

If the noise it coming from the box, which i wouldnt see how it could, then your relay box has a problem...most likely a bad connection or water in it.

Try replacing the solenoid like ive said. If that doesnt fix the problem then the relay is bad.

Check to make sure your starter button is working right. On mine that was not working. Check to be sure the button is making a good contact.
    Trikes i own.

OK. The noise is definitely coming from that black box (relay). Where can I get a relay (black box with the four prongs)?

PS - Thanks for your help.

That is what I was calling the solenoid (relay assembly). I may just neeed that black box with 4 male prongs. That is where the clicking is coming from. Did yours "click" from the same area before you changed the relay assembly (solenoid).

    Talking yamaha ytm200 electrical question

I too have a ytm200 with an electrical problem. Last owner lost key, jumped the brown and red/white wires from starter button onto the black starter solenoid (i believe). red/wht to pos and brown to ground. Have key now but when brown and red/wht wires patched, no start from start switch. Does anyone have a picture of the wiring for a ytm200 from the seat back to solenoid area? I have schematic but not 100 % accurate. I believe there is a red/wht wire from pos post on solenoid that is "t" to another red/wht connector but one of the wires seems to missing. Thanks alot. pbarbati@trebnet.com
