If thats like the 86 (is it?) then shouldnt need a . If it turns hard, the carrier/swingarm might be rusted or full of dirt. I just loosen the clamps and use pliers handles- no force needed.

Is the preload ring (I dont know the real name of it) on the shock the same size as the axle bearing carrier adjuster?

I'm sorry, your link didn't take me to any specific parts....??
I'm not sure what size wrench (mm's) the chain adjuster requires. And I don't know if the 84's are different sizes than the 85's.
I was only able to find a spanner wrench for the shock preloads, not the chain adjuster. I was hopin the preload ring would be the same size as the chain adjuster, then you would only have to buy one wrench for both.

Ya, thats the one I was thinking of, havent tried it out yet though.
Basically you want a hook spanner wrench, but what size? I don't know.
Sears has some nice ones too, but like I said, never bought one and tried it.
I'm probably going to order the double sided motion pro one, along with just the little single side 3/8 inch spanner wrench for the shock since its such a tight fit, and I can put my 3/8 inch ratchet on there to adjust the preload.

    Sears:

Heres the 3/8 one I was talkin about.

And also one for the axle:
