    Ricky

I think that my stator has gone bad or gotten really weak on my 86 T3. It seems as though it is getting very little spark and the lights are really low when the bike is running. I took off the outer cover and the flywheel and stator are really rusted. I can maybe clean them really good and improve the symptoms or I can get a new ricky set. What all is involved in this? Can I directly bolt and plug in the new ricky stator and flywheel to work or are there other steps involved? I have never done this. Thanks for any help.

Very simple. Just remove and replace with new R/S stator and fly. Set stator timing straight up with mark on case and install fly the only way it can go and you're all set. Just make sure to lap the new fly to the taper on crank end to get a good bite. Use regular old lapping compound to do this. If faces aren't mated properly you will shear keyway every time. And get a new oem bolt and washer for good measure.

Sorry, what are the faces you are referring to? The timing marks?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard you need a new voltage regulator to run the Ricky's on the newer models. My cousin put one on his 86 and it blew the headlight and taillight as soon as he turned them on.

Thanks for pointing that out. Thiese are the kinds of things that I am trying to figure out before I drop 250 on a new set. Anybody know the answer to this?

Someone on ebay used to sell a voltage regulator or something for these stators to run the lighting system but I don't see any of them for sale now. That's all I know. Never tried one so I don't know if it worked well or not. Also, ricky's tecate stators seem to be hit or miss. Iv'e seen some last and some fail. Still the cheapest option I know of though.

The outside of the taper on the crank end, and the inside tapered contact area of the fly. It is a taper fit. If they don't fit perfectly, on compression of the bolt, they wont bite into each other properly. Which in itself will aid in vibration and surely shear key. Old flys that have been spun on the crank, or have a nasty rust edge can spmetimes be tough to seat properly. In that case take a die grinder and carefully remove the 'high' leading edge. This allows it to fully seat onto taper of crank after lapping. Always install these pieces DRY!!! And use a small amount of blue locktite on bolt.

Honestly the best thing to do is to call Ricky Stator. I'm sure they would be more than willing to answer whatever questions you may have.
