    Yamaha 225 question.

This is a yamaha 225dr that someone has for sale locally. He says it wont go into gear. Would it be the rear end is blown? Shifter shaft bent. We can hear it click but it wont grab. What would the problem be?? Would it be an easy fix or a lot of money involved? Is it common for something like this to happen?

    Description:
A COMPLETE 1985 YAMAHA 225DR,TRIKE WAS RUNNING FINE LAST WINTER,NOW WILL NOT START,JUST CRANKS AND I CANT GET IT INTO GEAR.

Pop it in gear and give it a roll... If you feel resistance then the ring and pinion are probably turning.

Is there compression?? Does the kickstarter feel like it's moving things?

There are a bunch of reasons it won't move but if it's not too far away, I'd just go look at it and try to grasp a better idea on whats happened.

EDIT - click but won't grab?? Sounds like a simple external gear linkage problem. Look how low that shifter is. It's something related to the shift linkage IMHO.

I went to look at it. It rolls like it is nuetrol in every gear.

maybe the joint in the drive shaft is gone or the final drive is blown? As for the motor crank and don't start, maybe just need a carb cleaning.

What about when you roll it - is there resistance? And what about kicking it over, is there compression?? It does crank with the starter??

If you want to narrow it down, ask the owner if he will slide the driveshaft boot back. If the yoke is spinning it's somewhere else, if it doesn't then it's in the tranny. The SX is a simple clamp, not sure about a Yamaha but I sure do love all those DXL's - Honestly, it's what I wanted when I found my first 85 Honda SX about 10 years ago.

That machine looks to have low hours, I'll bet it's a simple thing. Does not look beat at all, get your wheels turning! I know you can figure it out.....

Make sure that the reverse lever is all the way forward. It could be not ajusted right or it is just not all of the way forward. To check the u-joint just pry the rubber boot back and shine a light in there and inspect it while rolling the machine back and forth.

I own a 225 dr if its not going into gear its the clutch or just the adjuster scew if its not right it won't go into gear at all but then again it could be anything you need to narrow it down

I just went out and looked at my 225dr. My reverse lever is all the way forward. It has 2 notches to go in. If its all the way forward its neutral. I cant tell in your pic because there isnt allot of moving between neutral and reverse on the lever.

225dxdude, cant tell from the pic but follow the linkage back to the middle drive. on the end of the linkage their is a rubber boot that that covers the end. on that boot their is a small rubber tab sticking up, hard to see if not looking for it,that tab should be in line with the tabs sticking up on the gasket side edge of the middle drive case. a little dirt hides these alignment marks very well. when locked in forward the tab on the boot should line up with the frontmost case tab. i'll try to take a pic of mine tonite and highlite the tabs.
