Talking ~*~Alright, Here It Goes! My FIRST Restore~*~ Update Pg. 5

    Ok,

So after my last thread of the tri-z's it made me realize I have what I am looking for, I just need to actually do something with it!

So here I go , I will either do amazing , or screw this up BIG time ....we will see.

This is my 1985 Honda 200x, I plan on stripping it down to the frame, and putting it back together WITH:

    ~Painted or powdercoated frame

~New BLACK plastics (I spray painted them with fusion 4 plastics to get an idea of what they will look like.....FYI Fusion SUCKS!!!)(also, I noticed Maier only sells black front fender and rear fenders in black but not the tank shrouds...What can I do about that?)

~New Hi-flight desert seat (Maybe Moshman's if I can afford it)

~Engine bored over to 10:5:1 by powroll

    ~Re-jetted carb

~and i will attempt to polish the forks, triple tree, swing arm, and axle

The list might get longer as time goes but this will be a very LONG rebuild....so sit tight!

Here's what it looked like the day I bought it:

Here is what it looks like s of today Jan 27, 2008:

I will defenately be asking TONS of questions on this!!!!

I hope this all works out, you guys (AND gals) enjoy the show, and I learn a lot from it!!!

Hey come on! I spray painted the old, faded plastics to see what black plastics would look like!

I won't be half a$$ing anything on this, hence why it will be a long build!!!

Did you know you can sand and buff that faded red plastic and make it look like new?

    Haha yep one of those..

To be honest I think the bike looked better before you got "creative" with it. But everyone's tastes are different.

    hey now.....

as i stated....I painted the plastics black to see what my new maier BLACK plastics will look like.....

These plastics will be thrown away!! hence why i spray painted them! lol

    Ok so my 1st question:

In the manual it says to remove the exaust before moving to the next step.

    My PROBLEM is:

I disconnected it, but with its shape, it wont come out all the way. is it ok to just leave it hanging there?

It doesn't matter what color you decide to go with as long as YOU like it. Make it yours. And yes, take your time, be patient, and take lots of pics along the way to keep track of how it came apart. Most of all, good luck and have fun.

your plastics look to be in good condition, no cracks. why throw them away? if their good, i would at least sell them to someone else. also they look to be OEM, and i know i prefer OEM over maier.

anyway, are your refering to the head pipe, because that should come out completely? i guess you could leave it on and disconnect it later when its easier? have fun, and keep us posted!

It's completely taken off of the engine, but it won't come out around the frame, the engine is in the way.

Can I just leave it hanging there?

I'm not terribly familiar with the older X models. However, most exhuast systems come apart in the middle. Right before the connect to the muffler. There should be some sort of band with a 12mm bolt through it. take the bolt out, then work the band back and forth to loosen it. Once it is loose, take the muffler off, you should then be able to twist the headpipe to a different postion and work it out. It's really pretty easy. As I said though, I don't have alot of experience with these models, and I"m not sure if they are 2 piece or 1 piece exhausts.

If those fenders aren't cracked and broken, don't throw them away. Hell bring them to the dunes one of these days when we're out there and I'll take them.

Just keep in mind as you go forward with this project that these things are 20+ years old and a lot of the parts are discontinued (like OEM plastic). Some of the stuff you decide to experiment with many times can have value and shouldn't be considered dumpster material unless it's really broken.

If you want to check out color schemes, the best way to do it is to mock it up on the computer. If you don't know how to do that several people here do. Just make a thread and ask someone to do it.

The plastics look good from a distance (and wet, like in the before pics) but up close they were super super faded, scratched, and make the trike look....well......23yrs old haha.

I read the "restoring old plastic" thread and spent about 4 hrs with JUST the front fender alone. 220 grit, 400grit, 600 grit, 1000 grit, 2000 grit...and it took out the deep scratches (but still visable) but it was still faded. Wasn't going to spend 12 hrs on the rear when I wasn't even happy with the front.

So with that said, I AM getting maier black plastiocs and I will hold onto these OEM one's and maybe sand off the crappy paint, and sell them. who knows.
