    Should I buy these plastics?

Hi i'm new to the forum but not new to 3 wheelers..

had a 200x for years that i loved until someone stole it!

just picked up a 84 250r that runs strong but needs some TLC. I'll post pictures soon and i have more questions...

but first, I need some advice.

One of the things i need is rear plastics. I found a guy that has original plastics from an 84 250r, but they sat in the sun for a long time and now they are bleached PINK!

I don't want to be riding around with pink plastics... but he says you can use plastic paint and it will look real good. I don't have any experience using plastic paint... what do you think? He is asking $85 for the rear plastics with seat and mounting brackets. the seat has a tear but not too bad. I attached a pic.

I see seats alone getting close to that on ebay... ( i already have a good seat so i could resell that)

Also, he has a set of red plastics that are cracked and zip tied that he would sell for $50 (including the seat and brackets). That is shown in the pic too.

The pink plastics have no cracks.

    What do you think?

    Thanks

    welcome to boards first off!

u can get new fenders from maire i still for the 84 and down r's i think, if not look around on here you will find a nice set.

as far as the faded ones go, you can scrape and sand them and get them to look decent but its alot of work.

i would stay away from the plastic paint.

were in MA are you from? did you buy the 84 r on craigslist with the blaster rear plastics>?

HA! Yup, thats the one... I live in Middleboro. Where are you?

    Picked it up for $500.

    I'll attach some pics...

Thanks for the advice, I'll look around some more for some better plastics.

I also need rear brake parts if anybody's got em. I have the rotor and the caliper stay, need everything else. Also lookin for a grab bar and headlight.

I actually have a rear caliper from my old 84 200x that needs a rebuild. Does anybody know if that will fit if I have the right bracket? I've been looking at the parts diagram and its very similar.

Last question for now... look at the picture of the sprocket hub. In the manual it shows a circlip holding that in place on the axle. Mine doesn't have one (it doesn't even have the groove for one). There should be one, right? How is the sprocket staying on there - rust??

    This board is awesome!

    Thanks

i have heard bad things about painting plastic. but i never did it so i dont know from experience.

for the parts you want post an ad in the classifieds section

i think the sprocket is suppose to be held on by a circlip, at least thats how mines held on on my 84 200x.

i had painted fenders before and they came out fine.if you want a showbike go with new but for a daily rider paint them you will be suprised on how they turn out.the way i did it was clean the plastic real good, then wet sand it starting with 400grit moving up to 1000grit.this means 400 then 600 then 800 etc.once again clean it real good then paint it ,mine turned out awesome.by sand it you can get most of the scratches out except for the deep gouges.good luck

Hey welcome to the boards. Nice to see another air cooled R on the boards.

As far as the fenders are concerned, I think it depends what you're doing with the trike. If you're going to restore it, I'd go with the Maier fenders. There's a few sites online where you can get them fairly cheap. And if you've ever tried to restore a fender, you'll quickly learn that the extra $70 or so you'll spend on the new replacement fenders is more than worth the work you have to put in sanding them. To me, sanding is only when you really have no other alternative. Try bdawgs. http://www.bdawgsplastics.com/index....D&ProdID=19156

Also, instead of buying a ripped seat, just contact the Moshmans here on the boards and have them recover the one you have. They do pretty incredible work.

Oh, and if you need new stickers for your new fenders, contact Harlan from here on the boards. His stickers are excellent and he has all of them for an '83-84 R. hjlysne@charter.net

I wouldn't go with 85 fenders on an 84. Just wouldn't look right to me.

Thanks for all the replies guys.. I'll consider all those options.

SWIGIN - do you have a picture of the 85r with TRX fenders?

I don't care if its all original or not, I just want to ride it! (and look decent)

Will the 85-86 fenders bolt on, or are mods required?

ATCT - thanks for the link/email.

Anybody else have a comment on the sprocket hub?

I'll post the wanted stuff in classifieds.

Heh, I didn't think he would take my offer, but he did.

We got lots of cranberry bog roads and power lines. some sand pits. less and less trails cuz they are building everywhere.

    Where's douglas? western ma?

ya but they are mounted cheezy. The kid drilled holes in the blaster plastics and just zip tied em to the frame!

Plus they are pretty small, they don't cover much of the tires.
