What do I need to do to make a trailer street legal? Do the fenders need enough clearance? Its 20ft by 8ft wide, is that too wide? I would like to know everything I can.

8ft is to wide, there is a limit on trailer size, you will get pulled over if the trailer is wider then the vehicle towing it, I have a 18ft car trailer that is actually buiklt to wide, but I manage to get away with it, but its not 8ft wide either.
Heh, we can't make custom trailers here anymore on account of the people stealing big trailers and making them theirs, but yea, just adhere to the guidelines and your fine.

In MN I know, 8' 6" is the max legal width to go down the road. That is from the widest point to the widest point, so if your tires are outside your bed, then they cant exceed this. If there under the trailer, it can be up to 8' 6". Most guys tend to try to stay around 8' just for ease of towing. Only other requirements that I know of are turn signals, brake and tail lights, some sort of corner markers (if your over a certain length, cant remember, you need reflective tape all the way down the side of the trailer) You also need DOT approved tires, fenders if your tires are outside the bed, safety chains capable of holding the trailers weight, and you'll need brakes if your over a certain weight. You need to check with your state DOT but this should give you a general idea. It also depends on how your licensing this trailer. In MN, you can go in tell them you made a trailer, 6x12, on a single axle, and they'll give you registration (they let the cops sort it out later if there are any problems.) If theres any commercial use and you need to have it DOT'ed, its gonna be a bit more of an intense process.
