    Swinger's back +3

Got the swinger back today and started installing it. I ran into an issue with the shock link not being long enough now. Here are the photo's. With a +3" swingarm what aftermarket link do I have to buy to make it right?

Right now as it sit's the link hole is about 1/2 to 3/4 inches off and the swingarm is resting on the bolt that holds all 3 parts together.

Not sure how to fix your problem, but thats why most guys extend them behind the shock mount.

Yeah, I told my pop's to call me when he got the swinger so we could discuss the job. But he didn't and extended it where the black arrow's are at.

I'd think it has or is supposed to be lengthened after both mounting points or you'll have to make up some sort of extended link to deal with it now.

yeah most extensions take place between the mount and the carrier, not before the mount.

Now you also have to consider the problem that if you use the existing mount location via some sort of extended dogbone, you will be altering the suspension geometry designed by Honda and possibly affecting how it performs. Back to the drawing board on that project.

Hmm... Good intentions, bad planning. There aren't many "aftermarket links" out there, not for homemade swingarms with your exact amount of extension, if you catch my drift. Like some people say, just build a new set of mounts to make your stock stuff fit.

id either start over or make new mounting brackets and weld em on. this is why when i extended mine 4 inches i cut it after the shock mounts. what ever you decide on good luck.
down to parts because i no longer have a place to ride trikes.

Will this link work or do I have to move the link mount foward 3" inches?

move the mount forward, that way your at the correct angle the manufacture designed it at. like was stated, changing the geometry could affect the way the entire rear suspension performs, and it could be for the worse. better off just moving the mounts 3" toward the pivot tubes. the original location.

I hear ya. I'm just gonna put that one in the corner and buy another one. I don't have a welder yet to fix it. If I do anything else with that one I will send it back to my dad. I talked to him last night and told him he extended the wrong end. He thought the swinger mounted backwards. He never saw the bike and I didn't send any instructions with the swinger. No harm no foul. The carrier ring was distorted from the TIG repair anyway as the carrier wouldn't go in without force. So I didn't put it in anyway as I don't want to be spending more money right now than I have to. I still need to get the zilla rebuilt anyhow.

If you can take up the added distance with any adjustable, other model or homemade aluminum link, I'm sure you'll be fine. None of us are Ricky Carmichael and changing that linkage by extending one link most certainly isn't gonna ruin the suspension. Ratio, linkage BLAH BLAH BLAH, adjust your preload and damping and it'll will be fine.

Now you know, next time you'll have it extended differently...
