Is the chain too loose or to tight?
is there any foreign objects in the chain? try rolling it with the clutch pulled in. it may be something u dont expect

It sounds to me like you might need some New sprockets and chain. If the sprockets are wore bad the teeth will bend and catch the chain. When this happens a clicking noise can be heard. I have seen that 100's of times.Originally Posted by soon2becomeaowner

I have a similar problem with a z50 right now. I know its not the same bike but here is the problem.
I got this thing and the guy told me the chain needed to be shortened by a link. Got it home and took the chain off and noticed that the rear sprocket resembled a circular saw blade. So I put a new front and rear sprocket on along with a new chain. It still made the clicking noise in neutral so i put it up on a milk crate and spun the back wheel and noticed the chain was coming off the rear sprocket sideways no matter how i adjusted the back wheel. Took the back wheel off and noticed that one side of the swingarm was slightly bent so i bent it back, put everything back on and the chain was rolling good now but when i turn the wheel i still got the clicking noise. Soooooooo,,,, I popped the chain back off and with the bike in neutral i turned the front sprocket by hand and once every turn it kind of stops and you have to turn it a little harder and then it turns smooth again. It also makes this same clicking noise when it is in all the gears but it gets a little louder as you go through the gears with it being the loudest in 3rd. But there is no affect on performance and the bike rides great so im not real sure WTF is going on.
My final decision was to let the kids ride it for the summer unless it starts getting louder and by winter tear it down and have a look inside the case. Anyone have any ideas what it might be???
My best guess here would be either a bearing going bad or a gear with broken tooth.Originally Posted by jdparsons1

If it stops ever so often going around it's most likely a bearing. My guess is it's a broken gear. Either way I wouldn't ride it until it's fixed. If it's the gear you could possibly damage more gears and bearings. If it's a bad bearing you could damage gears and other bearings.

Anyone have a bottom end for a z50 sittin around they want to part with???
I had a problem like this on a Warrior. It turns out that a bearing the carrier went out ('96 Warrior, stock bearings). This caused the power of the engine to pull that side of the axle towards the front of the machine. So the axle was slightly sideways, and so was the sproket, so the chain rolled off the sides of the teeth. It only made the noise under power though. :?
