    Honda 85 200X Help..cam chain tensioner issue

    hey
I just tore my 200x down and changed some tranny and kick start gears. I put it back together and fired it up but there the cam chain was pinging. I backed off the 14mm bolt like the manual says but the tinging doesnt go away/get any less noisy. So I pulled off the pulse generator so I could back the tensioner off again and kick it over to watch it try and tension itself but most of the time it did nothing then sometimes one side would tension or both would tension a little bit but you can almost take the chain off the cog when it tensioned the best I could get it. I only rode it for about 3 days before I stripped the sprocket shaft but I dont recall the cam chain pinging that badly. The new d.i.d chains come with a master link and the chain on it now currently doesnt..could this mean its still the original chain and worn this badly or is there a fault in the tensioner. Any input would be appreciated.

Probably worn out or something is wrong with the spring that puts tension on it located behind your flywheel. Most of the ATC's are running the stock chains and the guides are worn out too. DK has the guides and chain for a reasonable amount.

Some atc engines had a self adjusting tensioner which, when adjuted all the way out, it couldnt return to a former postion for the new chain to fit. I know the 200x doesnt have this kiond of tensioner but Im not sure if the tensioner will go back to a looser position for a new chain to fit. Mine has the same problem and Im looking at cgetting a new chain too. I am going to have a look at the tensioner.

Try loosening the 14mm bolt up and then lightly tap the top of it. Some time the wedges get bound up and the tapping normally loosens them up. If that don't work try putting a 10p nail down the hole in the 14mm bolt ( pushing the tensioner losse ), then release, re-tighten and see if that helps. If you still get noise, then something ( could be a number of things ) is probably wore out and will need replaced.

That nail trick worked for me. I just tried it and I heard the chain get quieter. Now to figure out valve lash and why the plugs a little black it will be perfect.

Howdy..I will try that tonite. The guides are good..the cam sprockets are good..so i think my chain is wore out or my tensioner isnt doing what it should be doing (tensioning)
