    2nd Gen. Tecate parts interchange

    - Has anyone found a swingarm chain slider from another machine to be close enough to be made to work? Local Kawi dealer said that the original was discontinued after a 10 minute history lesson to convince them that Kawasaki ever made something called a Tecate . If I need to drill new mounting locations to make one work, that's fine with me.

    - Will 1st generation Tecate rear sprockets(bolt pattern only concern here) bolt on the '86 sprocket hub?

    - Are the 1st and 2nd generation Tecate shift shafts the same?

the front sprockets are the same but the rear arent the 86 has a bigger bolt pattern. yes the shift shaft out of an 84/85 will work in the 86, i did it to mine but you have to take the whole star gear and the little spring roller that runs on it and switch them also. works fine though.

i have to roll my eyes and then re phrase myself and say the year and model, 85 or 86 kxt250 "T" COT EEEEE !!!

I have done a bit of slider investigation myself. Kawasaki makes a new 08 model dirtbike called the klr 140. I think klr, anyhow the swingarm slider is very close to the first gen t-3 in the way it lays completely flat against the swingarm. It extends down the side almost exactly the same. It mounts on the side with one small screw, and the front with a small hook deal. Looks to be a very simple addition. It will require two small drilled and threaded holes for fitment. I haven't yet tried it because the dealer can't order it yet. It's an all new model. But they have one on the floor. This looks very promising for us Tecate guys. Not sure how it will work on 86-87, but with the square swingarm they too have, It may be great for them as well. Cant wait to try this. Since we have no other quality options.

I do not know how useful this info is but JT sprockets makes some close sprockets.
    Here's what I mean:

JTR 1412 is stock Tecate and has 124mm bolt pattern with 8.25mm holes
JTR 610 has 125mm bolt pattern but with 8.5mm holes
JTR 735 has 124mm pattern but 10.5mm holes.

    I appreciate the input.

I thought the rear sprockets were different, but wasn't sure til now. I'll just use the shift shaft that's in it since I have enough to do to get it up and running, even though I'll have to tack weld the shifter on and come up with a shift shaft later on. I hate to do that, but I'm tired of not riding.

As for the chain slider, I'll just make one if I can't eyeball something that's close enough to be made to work until that dirt bike slider becomes available....then see how close it is.

    Good info ya'll!

Here's your problem. The staff that representing your local dealership is an idiot. This part is still available at bike bandit? Most dealers nowadays don’t care to deal with people with 20 year old machines. There are some who go out of their way though!

That's a good link right there!

They've got sprockets listed for both generations of Tecate. They offer 11-16 tooth fronts, and rear aluminum sprockets from 32- an unusable 74 teeth! A bit pricey, but I'll still order from them.

    Thanks!

you cant go by what the website says on bikebandit.com because alot of the stuff on there that is "availible", actually isnt. i went that route and thought the same thing the first time i ordered thru them. a 350 dollar order, like 10 different things, and the only thing i actually did recieve and was charged for was the tank strap. 12 bucks and change. why? because all the other parts were "discontinued!!!" bummer.

You're right. Bikebandit shows availability for many things they can't get.

I ordered a exhaust valve governor(didn't know that it was reverse threaded and broke the threaded section off mine) from them a few weeks ago that they listed as available, only to find an e-mail from them the next day that it was backordered from Japan and that they didn't know whether one would be available or not.

I cancelled the order and just drilled mine to be tapped/threaded for a bolt.....for less money, so no big deal.

Yeah, Bikebandit has a way of getting your hopes up, only to find out they can't get it. Sometimes they come through on some stuff though. I can't deal with anyone locally in my neck of the woods because most of them just want to sell new bikes and don't care to help out with used 20 year old bikes.
