    250sx, need help!!

so i was ridding my 250sx yesterday and it rode fine and i came in and took a break. and when i went to go back out as i went from reverse into neutral then first it stopped! and the whole thing locked up and the tires would no longer spin! and when i shift it from neutral to first the rear end just shakes. it will not shift down into reverse anymore! im thinking this may have something to do with the sp indles slipping on the rear axle? i noticed that the rear axle actually slid over to the right! if anyone has any information on this please help me out! because i want to know where to start taking it apart, and know what im looking for, and know what needs to be fixed.
    thanks

Maybe a bearing went out and let one of the drive gears sit crooked and not mesh right?

Sounds like you have some rear diff issues. Your axle should not move at all when everything is locked down. If your diff gears are smoked, then be prepared to spend a bill on ebay for a unit. If not you might get away with replacing/rebuilding the diff unit.
I would remove the rear wheels, brake system, and then remove the axle area. Then inspect the diff to see if there is problems with the gears.

I know this is a big red but its the same system in the rear

The OEM Honda shoes tend to come off of there lining. Usually one trip in reverse and then back to forwards is enough to finish them off. Especially the 85 model because the drum lets water in like a fountain. Take off the right rear tire and the 2 phillip screws, then the drum comes right off. Hope thats the problem.

Every 250SX benefits by a complete teardown. Thyen file off all the high spots, grease all the splines with the thickest grease available, replace the boot and seal everything back together with Yamabond or 3M or silicone.

Watch the oil color to indicate water entry.

Just a reminder that the rear drive is technically not a differential as it does not have separate rear axles allowed to rotate at DIFFERING speeds by way of differential gearing. Honda calls it a FINAL DRIVE UNIT. Picky picky. Keep up the good advice, guys - this is a terrific resource site. RW

You are indeed correct, but for this reference, I called it a diff, as that is what the bearing manufactures call it and I didnt want to confuse the member.

Well i fixed it. it turned out that the brakes were completely gone and somehow locked up onto the axle and had to soak it in wd40 and the brake drum off the axle. i took off the rear diff and it was full of water so i had to drain the fluid and replace a few time sto soak up all the water and get it clean again. but she is working good as new now! thanks for all your help
