Frets On Fire-FREE PC version of guitar Hero

OK, well, its not an exact copy of guitar hero for the PC but its a pretty damn snazzy 3rd party rendition of it. Check it out here: http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/

If you don't have a guitar from guitar hero (along with a necessary USB adapter) you can use your keyboard which actually isn't that bad. It comes pre-loaded with a few songs that I'd never heard but were actually VERY good.

And once you've conquered those, you can download this one http://www.fretsonfire.net/cgi-bin/i...+4#postid97231

and then download/import songs and fret tabs.

Its fun as hell, it doesn't have a story mode but it is awesome nonetheless, give it a whirl.

I got it for my Linux laptop. Worked fine. The "Learn to Play" was funny, after I realized I suck.

i play Stepmania. same concept, but the level lof difficulty far exceeds guitar hero's max hardness levels.

you can download homemade songs and make your own.

um....jordan on expert on gh2 and dragonforce on expert on gh3...call me when you get above 90%. lol.

sorry man, but there are a few songs on guitar hero where some sections come in at over 1400 notes per minute...that's a lot. most people can't even push a single button more than 9 times per second with one finger. it can get freaking hard after ya been drinking a bit.

lol you should see some of the songs i can play. the way the steps are measured isn't by the game, but my the writer, so i cant accurately compare "difficulty", but a few songs i used to be able to play the screen looks like solid arrows. ill try to get a screenshot of a few and post back in a little bit.

used to play every day for 2 years (needed something to fill high school class time with)
small school, most people liked to play.
havet played much in about a year, so i lost alot of skill, but im still not too bad.

    heres some vids.
CLICK couldnt ever pass this one, but was getting there
CLICKcould pass this one a year ago, not any more.
CLICK or CLICK these i can still play well

you HAVE to check these out. these are using the mods i describe below.
heres one playing a song on stock playing settings CLICK
heres the same song, only enabling Drunk mode CLICK

you can set it up so the arrows scroll into the screen, much like Guitar Hero.
Many songs have different "speeds" in which the arrows move, and some songs the arrows will speed up and slow down/stop, it throws you off big time. i like to play using settings that keep the arrows moving at a constant speed in all songs all the time, makes it more fun for me personally.
there are also other settings that make the arrows disappear randomly, make everything sway back and fourth, so just when you think you've mastered it you can make it 100% harder all over again.

i have played both. There are infinite more options with this game. sometimes the amount of "buttons" to be pressed isnt always what makes this game a royal pain in the ass. when the arrows speed up and slow down, well, think of it as if the GH icons were to accelerate and brake while you were trying to play.

and since my laptop doesnt register a button is pressed if more than 2 buttons is pressed at once, just slamming all the buttons doesnt work.

agreed, hey at least this is a lot cheaper than a Gibson SG right?

seriously though I find that most serious guitar players arent very good at this game, at least including myself and others I know. Its funny because I can rip up and down the scales pretty quick and shred with most of the best of them and consider myself a decent guitarist, but dang I suck at that game haha. and whenever I play the game I end up wishing I just had a real guitar around to play the same song on oh well, cool that you can get it on your PC, good find

I have it also, I had an old keyboard that I popped all the keys out of except the F keys and enter/esc. Its actually harder than guitar hero I think because the keys are so tiny. I could never get the purple right since it has a gap between f4 and f5.
