I am in a bind and need to know if a 85 250r axle will work in a 86 250r?
I know that they will swap one way but not the other.
thanks
chris

No the 85 will not fit the 86. The sprocket hub will hit the carrier. The 86-89 axle will fit the 85 though.

What if you stick some large chamfers on the sprocket and run the 86-89 bolts?
I did that on my X, it has an 85 sprocket/hub, billet carrier and 86 swinger/brakes. The sprocket need the heavy chamfers as the bolts has an 82 or 90 degree angled head. I can only put them in at one spot in the rotation due to clearance issues but it works. I nthe pic below you can see that the bolts are allen head, angled, and clearly dont have enough room to be installed on the rear side of the carrier...

I have a durablue carrier. will it still hit?
I think i may need to once again realize that i shouldn't answer questions i dont know for sure. I was out in the garage tearing down the front of the X, and i noticed that the R's have a threaded sprocket hub, so i have no idea what will work. But on the other hand cant you simply use an 85 hub on a later axle for clearance issues? Either way i dont think my idea is gonna do anything on a machine that has the sprocket mounted on the outside (away from the carrier) of the hub, TC...
Let me make sure I got this right an 86 axle will work in an 85 carrier? Man I've let allot of good deals slip away because I thought I had to have an 85. Why does durablue still make both years and other makers like rpm says theres will only fit down to an 86?
Well i have an 85 sprocket hub with an 86 aftermarket axle, hub and stock 86 brakes on my 350x but like i said i'm not sure about the 250r's unless you drill out the threads on the hub and used the allen bolts/chamfer i was talking about above...
the 85 will NOT work on the 86 carrier. the sprocket does not line up
