    86 Versus 87 200X kicker shaft revealed...

I just opened up a motor I bought from another board member.

This motor was an 87 and had a 19mm kicker shaft. I have about a half dozen engines and 86 shafts and they are all 16mm. It's possible that the late 86 batches had the larger kicker diameter as a result of so many of them snapping.

The decompression cable is NOT available and very hard to find used but I suggest you run them on your 86/87 200X. That small amount of lessened compression may help with the kicker shaft failure issue.

Also be aware that both the 86 and 87 kicker are available new for about 85$. The 86 part number ends in 000 and the 87 ends in 670.

So, be careful buying the right shaft and or kicker if you need one.....

I'll check soon to see if the clutch cover is identical but I believe it may be the same aside from a larger ID oil seal on the kicker shaft. If I can, I'll post up some pics this weekend.

PS - Took me 10 minutes to post this, whats up with the dam forum all the time??

Hey Steve, I actually just got home to the mail today..haha finally cashed the check (hopefully thats not a inconvenience).

The shaft that its my motor is a 19mm but is a 86. Also its still bent because of the high compression.

You SOB!! You F'D up my checkbook forever!!!!! J/K lol, must have been some point that serial numbers changed and the shaft diameter got increased. I wonder at what number that changed and if there were a "service bulletin".

Which reminds me that Mr NOS Bruce promised to post the service bulletins a couple months back and never did. I'll have to post up a new thread.........

Anyhow, thanks Twilight for the parts. I haven't been doing to good with 86/87 heads. They are almost all junk because there is so little material where the exhaust studs thread in. Not to mention people that use SCREWDRIVERS to get chit apart..........................

Anyhow, thank you for your help

That motor I got from you is 16mm, whats your serial number??

Just an FYI, the clutch cover DID change on the 87. It is opened up more for the larger kicker shaft. So..... If you guys go to upgrade, your gonna need the cove too unless it has enough meat to be bored.

Unfortunately, I have about 6 86 shafts and only one 87, but, I'll put the 87 shaft in the Powroll motor I'm building.....

Found it on EBAY - No one bid............

The 87 Kicker shaft is actually 20MM and I got a new kicker for the 87 for 83.62$ - Thats not bad at all!!

Remember, you need the clutch cover and all the gears and guts too!!

    BUMP....

I won another bottom end, listed as an 86 motor in an 87 frame. Got it abot 75$ shipped The serial number is TB05E-6401***.

The motor arrived and the shaft is the larger 87 shaft or about 18.5mm.

I'll have to check the serial number but this may help confirm that the late 86 runs had the larger shaft.

I wish Bruce had got back to us on the Service Bulletin, I'll have to PM him and see if he came up with anything.....

I've got enough fat shafts now, I'll let you guys win a few

i would just like to see one to see if a 250x or 350x or any other cable would work.

as of last year you could still by a 350x cable so if it could work it would help you guys out.

90s......89 Suzuki quad racer 250 (raced 250 A class for 6 years, late 90s.. custom framed 250x with long travel shocks and a built 350x motor.... built Honda 110
00s...... chomeoly framed 350 RX with all the goodies (thanks to my bro)
    2012.....Replaced the 350x motor for a 444cc YZ426

part #7 SKU: 28251-HB5-020 SPINDLE, KICK STARTER (Honda Code 2386043) (NOT AVAILABLE) Use from Engine SN 6308849

    and for '87:

part #7 SKU: 28251-HB5-670 SPINDLE, KICK STARTER (Honda Code 2444008)

So it seems there are 3 different shafts.
    Thanks Brad,

I believe that confirms that in 86 they did see a problem and made a change somewhere during production....

I just got yet ANOTHER 87 shaft for next to nothing so I ordered a couple more 87 kickstarters

Thanks Swigin , I bought a few of the 350X ones. I think they'll be available for awhile but they are different. I'll post up some pics of my 200X versus the 350X.

DC, I remember talking to a Honda mechanic a couple years ago. He told me that they did infact up the size of the kicker shaft in the later 86 models. I'm not sure but He may of also stated some type of recall on the early models.

You going to Tf this year? Would be Sweet if I could Get MY TC motor done ad have a Late model 200X show down.
