Should I lube my ATC200 pull start mechanism

i have an 85 ATC200S which starts fine but the pull start does not go back in completely by its self i have to assist it. But as many of u probably know there is a hole located on the pull start drum cover at the top is the purpose of that hole so i can spray CRC down there or lube it in some way?

should i spray it down that hole at the top?

and ive owned the trike for 4 days and the previous owners say it has a new pull start drum so it should have plenty of life left in it

That hole is for the decompression cable, not having one is not that big of a deal but don't spray anything down there instead plug it up.

I would take is apart, clean, re-grease, install a new rope, and re-wind it. It's kind of a pain to do but I think there is a how to posted here some where.

Yes it would, it relieves the compression so its easier to pull.

It doesn't make that much of a difference and IMO it is not worth the hassle.

Its there so there is less strain on the pull start. Thats one reason why so many pull starts are broke and raped............

it is nice to have the decompression cable but if your easy on the rope you dont need it...it probably just needs to be rewound.

Do you have a manual for your trike yet? There is LOTS of good info in their. I have a manual for every atc/atv I have and read them all often. They are a MUST have in my opinion. If you don't have one there is a guy on this forum that has them you can download.

You can use the decompressor manually if you like. On the right side of the motor when your sitting on it. There is a lever on top of the head, just flip it all the way back to ya. It will decompress for 1 pull of the rope. Neither my 200S that I had or my current 185S have the cable, and I never use the decompresser, I just make sure they are tuned good enough to start within a couple pulls, to save my arm.

Most of the cables were removed and left of if a person had to take the recoil off to change the rope or remove the recoil for some reason. It was just quicker to throw the recoil back on there and ditch the cable and tape up the hole.
