    It Won't Start!

Oh good god, I've been working and haven't had a chance to ride my 3 wheeler. I road it a bit after I got my new rims and tires and adapters (2 of which are from vealmonkey, thanks again)

But, now it won't start. I had to put a screw in the overflow tube of the carb because it kept just completely flowing all my gas out as I road, or as it sat. It didn't seem to efect anything.

Now the gas is coming out the TOP of the carb and around the threads of the screw!

I assume I need a new carb. the float is probably bad, but I can't seem to find a carb on ebay for it.

I'd like to try and save as much money as possible, does anyone have a carb for a 1970 honda atc90 OR another idea to try to fix it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brett

Sounds to me like there is a crack in the float and its filled with gas. Take it out, if it is full up try and shake as much of the gas out of the float as possible, (careful coz they are very brittle) then leave it somewhere warm to completely dry out. Then heat a knife up with a lighter or torch, not too hot, then carefully 'smooth' the plastic around the crack, thus sealing it. now be careful not to melt right through it. Thats what i did 18 months ago on my '82 honda 70 and its still fine today

Interesting. I'll have to try that. I know the float is pretty dented and stuff but it seemed to work fine. I'll have to pull the carb and check it when I get the ambition to do so.

Thanks for the information! Only thing I have a question about is, there isn't any plastic on my float, that I know of...... It's all metal, a really soft metal at that.

    Anyways, thanks.

Either your float is cracked or your float needle or seat are bad. Have your replaced any carb parts? Did you put the float in upside down? Leave the float in a glass of water (or gas) over night and see if it sink.

Putting a screw in the over flow tube shoulda told you you had a problem right there, stopping it up was sure not gonna fix it.

Probably just a dirty or worn out gas shut off needle within the carb.

Plugging the hose was not the right thing to do - lol!! Why aren't you shutting the gas off at the petcock anyhow??

Well i gess that stuffs my theory then!
If its metal i gess the chances of a crack are somewhat slim then!

Well, I took the carb off. I found a crack in the float, so I (being broke) put a gasket sealant on it, it worked. (After I got the gas out of the left one). It started up great, but now either the float is sticking, or the throttle is messed up. Whenever you hit the throttle the RPMs rev up REALLY high and stick, until you tap the throttle again. Then it goes down.

I gave up. I'm not sure what to do from here, I can't put much more money into that thing. Hence why I'm looking into a 185s for $300.

    Any ideas that are free/cheap?

anyone have a new float for my trike?

    Thanks again guys, appreciated.

most gasket sealant wont hold up to gasoline...either use jb weld...wich i doubt is a good idea because it will add weight to the float...just buy a new float cuz there only like 20 bucks

Yeah, I was hoping $20 or so for a new carb and what not. The sealant that I have is made for being submurged in gasoline and what not, so yeah. I think I need a new carb, and maybe a new throttle, but I think it may all be in the carb.

Dang, I wish I had someone near me that knew what they were doing so they could come over and do what they can without getting new parts, or help me establish what I "NEED" to do, to get it in great running order.

I can't afford $80 on the carb, I just spent $100 on wheels.

So, it's in the shed for another few months.

    --Brett

(I was thinking about getting just the float, but I'm not sure if that'll fix it, and I don't want to have to spend more than I actually have to.)

Dude, you don't have to buy a whole carb. The float is $10.99 if that's all you need. Where are you at? Billings........?

And a carb kit is just $15.99 if you think some of the jets and gaskets need replaced.

Yeah, but I don't know if that's all I need. That's the problem.

Yeah, I'm in Billings. Nobody around here that I know, knows anything.
