    Alright, what did I do wrong? ( 1986 200x)

I finally got around to replacing my broken kickstart and after I got it all together I have realized it kicks over way too easily and wont start for me. I can get the compression up to 150, but it takes about 10 kicks to do so. I havent put the oil back in yet and was wondering if that could be why? Or could I have installed something wrong?

i'd put oil in it 1st and then check your valve clearance. you could have a valve hanging open.

Before I did this though, it started within 2 kicks, how can taking the case apart mess up a valve?

dunno, how it happens, but I just built a 85 200x motor, and it did the same as what happened to you, on mine the intake valve was too tight, it had less than .002 clearance when is should have been .003 to .005. it's something worth checking...

I would put oil in it, that could make quite a difference.

I agree, put oil in it before anything else. I personally wouldn't crank it over without oil, even if its cheap stuff just to see if its gonna fire you need something in there...

Then maybe its the first time you got the decompression right. Watch the lever as you kick it over. It should start off released, activate at about 1/4 kick, and release right after.
If you arent sure unhook the cable and see if it changes anything. Decompression is for wuss's anyway

haha I actually disconnected it just now and it started first kick! woohooo!!!

Bad news is I must have did the clutch wrong, because its not engaging =\ How much should I torque the springs down? I know not to bottom them out, so they are half way right now.

the clutch springs both have a really low torque value, like 7-10 foot pounds.

you didnt tighten them down all the way? How are they supposed to work if the bolts that go through the springs arent tight?

so... that means I do tighten them down all the way? I went by the manual just now and it says 2-3 turns in, but thats barely finger tight!

yeah, the springs need to be tight in order to hold the clutch plates tight against the steel plates...hopefully nothing rattled out and broke while you had them that loose
