without hacking the frame all up - no. The 350X motor is really tall and will not fit.

No way, we tried putting a 86 200x motor in a 85 frame and it was nowhere near fitting. 350 motors are big, without cutting the frame up in 300 places it wont work.
1986 200x- old school D.I.D wheels, Gold D.I.D X-Ring Chain, Rad MFG. Carrier, PRM Grab Bar, Pro Circuit T-4 custom, Maier plastics, 85x forks, 18x10.5x8 kenda klaw mxr's on itp steels, the money pit never ends

2004 YFZ450 - CP 12.5:1, cam mod , gibson nerfs, hmf pipe, protaper bars + risers, dg bumper/skids, holeshot gncc's on itps, cycra handguard and more stuff to come.

Anything is possible. Clowns put CBR450 motors in 83-85 200X chassis.

Will it handle well? will it turn? will it have nice suspension? NOPE!!

Will it snap that frame like a twig? Yep

drop a CR engine in it
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person who is doing it.

Theres just the CR125 and CR250.
The 250 would require frame mods, the 125 will drop in but depending on what year you use you'll need to make room for the rads and you'll need to find a way to route the expansion chamber in the X frame which isn't easy.
The 2 stroke is worth it though.

Well nothing is a direct bolt in and will require some fab work but the late 70's CR's were air cooled meaning no radiators to worry about which makes the swap a little easier.
If you did want to go the 2 stroke route though, I'd look for something a little bigger like a 175cc or KDX 200. Not sure how well a 125 would pull around a 280lb machine.

As far as I know, the CRF engine is too tall and would require frame work.

see I don't know about that, the real issue is price, you could get a brand new bike for the price of a new engine. and you could get a brand new engine for 4 or 500.

hell, you could buy a perfect engine from rpm_atv on ebay and not touch it for 10 years.

a crf230 engine is based off of the 200x motor and should bolt right in for the most part. You shouldnt have to change any engine mounts but things like the rearward kickstarter and maybe wiring wouldnt be a direct swap.
