    Tadaaa!!!

I pulled the motor out so I could get at the chain that was bound up on the front sprocket. That's what was keeping the trans from turning even though it was in neutral. So I could get it into neutral and 1st, but it would still only go halfway into 2nd. So I turned the front sprocket while shifting, mimicking rocking the trike while shifting, and it clicked into 2nd. 3rd was bound up the same way so I repeated turning the sprocket and it went into 3rd and halfway into 4th. I repeated the "rocking" trick, and it clicked into 4th. At this point I could go up and down all the way! The gears must have gotten out of whack when the chain flew off. Thanks for your help guys.

I've always been the one to say "95% of shifting problems are OUTSIDE the center cases" I can't tell you how many machines I've bought or had brought to me because the "tranny was junk" and it was usually a spring, broken pin or external problem.

Glad you got it sorted out :

So I replaced the front sprocket since the old one had teeth broken off from the chain getting bunched on it. So I pulled the subtransmission apart to get at it. Now when I put the sub tranny back together I'm having a problem. When it's in high, it works fine. When I switch it to low, the sprocket will turn by hand for a bit and then stop. It only happens when I pop the cover on and in low. I can turn the sprocket backwards a bit and then it will stop also. If I leave the cover off I can make the high/low switch fine and it seems to work alright. I can't tell if one of the gears inside hits the cover once I put it on only in low? Everything fits in its spot inside the cover. It seems pretty straight forward when putting it together. Anybody else had an issue like this with a Honda subtransmission?

    Thanks,
    Rob

i remember that happening to me on my first 110 years ago. something isn't lined up correctly before you are putting the cover on. one of the shafts probably isn't seated all the way down, or you have them mixed up. pull it all apart and make sure everything goes in correctly piece by piece.

It looks like it's a slightly bent tooth (I can barely tell) on the gear that gets moved back and forth when sliding the lever. When the cover gets put on it pushes the gears closer together and when it gets to this tooth it can't get past it.
