How can I get a key for an older Honda?

I've got a 1972 SL70 and the ignition key is missing. It's just unplugged which eliminates the need for it and I just use the kill switch but I can't use the head light like that. There is a number on the ignition switch but my Honda dealer said they can't get that key anymore. I would think they should just be able to cut one off the number but they say no. Does anyone have any idea?

Locksmith is the only way. They might not have that key blank anymore so he will need to retrofit it to another. You could always do it the old school way. Drop the tumblers and use whatever key you like or a screwdriver.
Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

How do I do that with the tumblers? The dealer gave me like 5 old keys that were close on numbers that he thought might work so I could just use one of those and no one would know.

If you can get the cylinder out you just remove the protective metal covering and dump them out. Every ignition switch is built diffrent as how it comes apart. So you will need to look at it. If it want come apart without the key ( which is how most of them are ) then get you a skinny nail and a . You can look in the key hole and see the pins at the top. There should be about 4. Using the nail, knock out the first one, then on and on. It takes some time. After you have them all broke loose blow it out with air and kinda force the new key into it. It might take some slight ing. Hammer it a little bit and pull it out. Keep doing this until it goes all the way in. The main reason for this is there will be partial pieces of the pins in there. Your basically moving them out of the way. Now with the key in turn it over. It might take some pressure because of partial pins. This will make everything look normal. Now if you dont care, find a screwdriver approximatley the same width of your key. Hammer it in there. Use channel locks to turn it over. then you can use they key or whatever else you want for now on.

http://www.hondakeys.com/ I ordered a key for a '76 trail 70 from this site. You have to know the 5 or so digit number off of the ignition to get the correct key. Good luck, I was very happy to find that site.
