    Alright, what did I do? 1986 200x

Okay, so after posting the topic about what is choke and what isnt on my 200x, I decided to take off the carb and clean it out/adjust it. Well now it revvs WAY too high and doesnt stop revving even when I adjust the idle screw. If I have it on choke (or what DC says is choke, with the butterfly closed), then the revving slows. But no matter what I cant get it to idle like it did before.

    Any ideas?

Make sure the plunger is sliding freely in the carb. Look through the carb where the inlet hooks onto it to make sure the plunger is sliding down all the way. It should slide down to at least almost closed off all the way. If it isn't either the throttle cable needs adjusting or possibly the little teardrop on the end of the cable isn't seated properly in the plunger. You can also check to make sure there isn't an air leak between the carb and engine.

you have the throttle slide in 180 degrees out
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person who is doing it.

What Eric said you have the slide turned 180 degrees. The other thing make sure the lead piece on the end of the cable is seated in the proper hole where it rides in the slide. If it isn't it will hole it open thus holding the throttle open making it rev high.

yea i agree, you probably have the slide bacwards, very common mistake. take the carb back off and look through the intake to make sure the roundslide is seated almost flush with the bottom if not the whole way.

if that is ok, spray your carb boot around te carb and cylinder with ether or carb cleaner. if it revs higher you have an intake leak.
let us know how you make out.

Well checked the throttle boot to carb, intake boot and the slide. Good news is now it doesnt rev oh so high, but it still wont idle right, will at 1/2 choke but wont with no choke. Tried playing with the air screw, but it will just die if I take it off choke.

I can figure out a 2-strike just fine, but this thing kicks my ass!

yeah if the butterfly is closed thats deffinatly choke ,choke works by enriching the fuel /air mixture for start up buy creating a stronger vacuum to pull more fuel from the jets

Sounds like your idle jet is clogged.

Cleaned the carb as mush as possible, checked the jets, clear enough to see through. I am wondering though.. could it be because my air filter was off? im getting a new UNI tomorrow. I know thats doubtful but maybe? Also my needle is on the second notch, i'll try the third.

Ok. Whats the history on the bike? Has it always run this way or is it something it just started doing? When you say as clean as you can get and can see through the holes are you talking about the holes on the sides of the jet or the hole that goes through the middle of the jet?

both the sides and top. History on the bike is that its a low hour machine. Ran for 11 hours since the tiny tach was put on in 1991. Use to idle like my 200e, but after I added a new thumb throttle and replaced the headlight... it idled oddly and that was just last week, so... now here i am.

yup, only other thing was that the tank had rust, but it has a fuel filter now.

Only other things besides the carb would be to change the plug and check the valve clearance.

The old one was a twist throttle and I did try that last night before calling it quits, no difference now. The thumb throttle and cable is from a 86 200sx, but I was told by many people here that would work.

I disconnected the headlight and it idled normally! What the hell?

I JUST got a 200x, and it was starting hard so I took the carb off and cleaned it. Put it back togeather and WOW it revved to the moon! Wound up I had the slide in backwards And all it needed to start easier was to have the thumb throttle adjusted in so it wouldn't give it gas. I must have kicked it over a ba-zillion times and my problem was right on the handelbars
