NEED Engine Options for Honda 250x

I bought this ATV for $400.. got it up and running for about 15 minutes and it died on me.. missing 3rd gear also... The compression is low now.. What are my engine options for this? I know I can use teh 300ex engine but what else is an option.. I want to keep it cheap though.. I only use this to follow my boys around the yard teaching them how to ride.

Wanted to EDIT this.. I am trying to rebuiild the engine now.

ALso let me know if you have anything for sale as well.
    Thanks
    Chris

honda makes a nice 5.5hp with oil alert... you could probably borrow one from your woodsplitter.... lol...

Actually 250x/300ex parts should be easy to find cheap.. but the lifan engine would be perfect for the kids to ride at a later date after you are done chasing them around

you do know you could fix it yourself for alot cheaper then a new motor.

like you said its just a yard putter.......so just hone and ring it and get a new tranny gear/shift fork.

the early 250x's were known to jump out of 2nd i beleive but it might of bin 3rd (bin to long ago to remeber) a new gear fixed them right up.

What tools are required to split the case apart? I know I can do the piston with no problem at all. I am tempted to pull it apart.. I have rebuilt a few top ends on 2 strokes.. 1 four stroke and replaced some of the low range gears on my 4wd suzuki ATV.. but never spit a case apart. I know I need the flywheel puller but what else? I have the manual already.

basic hand tool is all you need other then the puller.

is there any tool needed to split the case?? All I need is the flywheel puller then? Int he book its says something about a tool to sepereate the case as well as install the crank back in the case.

I have plenty of tools. I was a VW the until I injured my shoulder not monay specialty ATV tools.

Engine is out and I am starting to disassemble it.. I am down to just the case now.. a wiseco .50mm piston is in the engine .. So now do I just hone and re ring it or see about boring it over again.. ANy thoughts.

I also forgot to mention.. cylinder head has been replaced before.. almost brand new looking... But top of piston is a little chunky.

my vote would be a 300ex engine...it'd run you cheaper than a 350x engine these days.
