I saw a running 1985 ATC250R advertised on sitrader.com for $700. I've already have super nice 1985 but thought this could be a nice rider and figured I'd pick it it. I sold my first 1985 250R for $650 (dumb) so I thought this is my chance to make it right. lol.
Talking to the guy on the phone he was a total dick. I asked the condition and he just says, it's old what do you expect. And when giving directions he told me first house on the road. I asked which side and he just says, it's the first house! WTF.
So I get there and it's an 84! At first I was disappointed but then thought it would be cool to have a liquid cooled and an air cooled. The first thing I notice is the bad. Round head light duck taped into the housing. ha ha. And minorly patched fenders.
Then I notice the original seat, super nice gas tank and air scoops, original front tire, new rear tires. And this thing is very, very original and untouched. It has every little aluminum wire loom holder, every grommet and rubber bushing. Complete parking brake assembly, air box & every clamp that holds the lid on, tail light etc. And a brand new UNI filter. The foot pegs are completly straight. The frame paint is barley worn at all by the foot pegs and I didn't even see any rust on the frame anywhere.
The guy I bought it from was like 70 years old and it seemed like he bought it to use for a utility. He said he thinks he might be too heavy for it because he can't keep the front end down and it came over on top of him twice so hes saying the heck with it. I was looking at it about 9am Sunday morning and he told me to think about it then come back. I asked if he'd take $500 right now and he said he will right now. Then I said lets load it up, he was like seriously? lol. I told him to try a utility like a big red next time, he said hes gonna get a 4-wheeler.
The pic is with a camera phone so it's not too clear and the bike is still dirty, it will clean up very nice. It also smokes really bad and doesn't open all the way up quite right. I think he might just have too much oil in the gas. The rear tires are new but 22's. I prefer 20's but I guess it will work. When I bought my 85 R it came with 3 sets of rear gold wheels and tires. I just realized that the one set is from an 84 R and they have brand new 18" turf tamers on them. I might try them out, not sure.
I had an 83 a few years back but it was a pile of crap and I never got too familiar with it so if anyone has any suggestions for this bike please let me know. I have some new blue fork boots that I'm going to put on it for starters. And also get the correct head light. I noticed the carb is pretty small. I replaced the stock carb on my 85 with a 36mm flat slide. Can anyone tell me if the 85 carb will fit the 84 or is this even a good idea? Any other performance tricks? Oh yeah, what are my options for a good pipe? I also remember seeing Maier super scoops, are they still made, anyone have them on their bike, are they clear or dull plastic. If they look good and are shiney I might get some.

Good to see that ones in good shape. when i use to have my air cooled R i ran a 85R carb and it seemed to work good.

So did the 1985 carb fit in the stock boots on the air box and the boot that connects to the engine? If so I think I'll give it a try.
Once I clean it up I'll get some better pics. That one doesnt do it justice. The tank stickers and 250R stickers are in great shape. It even has part of the pro link stickers on the fenders and the ATC250R stick right above the tail light, tool box maybe.
