    '84 200m and trx200 projects

I posted this thread in the atv section, but since it involves a 3 wheeler too I thought I'd post it in here as well...

Hey guys, I'm new here. I recently bought a rustbucket of an '84 200m that I was planning on fixing up. I got the engine running with just a new spark plug and cleaning/rebuilding the carb, but the frame, brakes...well....the rest of it is shot, so I was planning on just salvaging the motor out of it. I came across a 1984 trx200 and was able to pick it up for real cheap. Everything on it is good except for the motor. SO, the plan was to just swap over the 200m motor and call it a day. When I got it home I realized that the trx200 was a SHAFT drive. I didn't even notice before. SO, now I have TWO projects on my hands. I will be fixing up the motor on the trx200. I will also be acquiring an '85 200x roller to put the 200m motor in.

The problem with the trx200 motor that I know of SO far is that the cam chain broke. Today I ordered a new cam chain and sprocket, gasket kit, intake and exhaust valves, and a flywheel puller. Hopefully I'll replace all of this, throw in a new spark plug, and clean out the carb a bit and she'll fire right up. My fingers are crossed. I'll keep you all posted and throw up some pics later if you are interested.

The 200m frame is rusted more than I thought it was when I bought it. Right under the engine it is half rusted away in a few places and some of the bracing pieces in the back close to the bottom of the frame are the entire way through. I COULD take this all apart, have it blasted, and pieces welded in or pick up a frame off of ebay, but I have an opportunity to pick up a 200x roller in great shap real cheap, so that's the route I was going to go.

Do you think I should do something else? I'm open to all ideas and advice. I'll post up some pics sometime this weekend. I was testing the waters here to see if this was a very active board or not and if it wasn't I wasn't going to bother wasting my time. I post on gixxer.com about my '90 gsxr 1100 and the guys there are great, so I've been posting about my atv/atc projects there, but thought I could maybe get some better help on one of these forums....

    Thanks for the reply

If you are going the 200x frame way, make sure its not an 86/87 frame. Otherwise it should bolt up just nice. You will get a great machine out of that. If you need any help I am sure that someone here will chime in and PICS will greatly help us, help you.

You will be making an auto-x as the memebers here call it, and trust me! They are FUN!!! BTW I recently bought a 2004 R1 street bike.. love it.

Even if I got your 200m frame for real cheap I would still need a ton of stuff. That's why I was looking at getting a roller and the 200x popped up. I would need a new throttle cable, ignition, run/start switch, brakes and brake lines. Plus I would have some work to do on the plastics, new headlight, and a few other little bits.

I DID buy a brand new seat for it if anyone is in need of one though. I haven't stapled it on my seat pan yet, so you could have just the foam and pad OR the whole package.

    Where are you located at?

Hey...I got a flywheel puller. It's pretty much just a 14mm bolt that screws into the center. I don't really get it, but whatever.... so, HOW do I get the flywheel to stop moving, so I can tighten this bolt?

Well thanks for the offer man, but I'll pass.

I did manage to get the flywheel off tonight. Now I just have to figure out how to get some slack in the cam chain to get it back on.

Let's see if I can get this baby fired up this weekend.

Update - I messed with the engine a bit today and it looks like I might be able to get it back together and attempt to start up the trx200 tomorrow. I also talked to the guy selling me the 200x tonight. I'm picking the roller up for $150 and he's delivering it on Monday. He should be sending me pics of it tonight. I'll post them up tomorrow sometime along with pics of the trx200 before and after I tore it down to get at the motor. The 200x only needs a tank, exhaust, and rear rotor, which I should be able to pick up from JDLAW for a few $$. That along with the 200m motor and I'll be set.

    Stay tuned for pics.

I didn't do anything with the projects today. I'm missing too much hardware to put the CDI, cam sprocket, and all of that stuff back together, so I just wrote down what I need and I'll see if I can pick it up tomorrow. I should be getting the 200x roller tomorrow afternoon too. I'll post to let you guys know.
