Time has come to replace the original clutch in my '85 R. I want to stick with OEM parts since the originals gave 23 years of service. Should I go with the '85 aluminum plates or the '86 steel ones? Will the extra weight be noticeable when I rev it?

Use the steel plates. The aluminum ones are poor. That is why the 85s have more clutch problems than the 86. I upgraded my 85R plates to the 86 with the 89 clutch upgrade.
The OEM fibers are awsome. I have used Barnettt and other aftermarket clutches and now only use Honda OEM. They take a beating. I do use heavy duty springs though.
You can't beat a Honda clutch, just use heavy springs. I have had Barnetts let me down back when I raced, never a Honda.

Aluminum grab better, but you get longer life out of the steel and they won't contaminate your oil so quick. I would go steel. I don't think you'll notice the difference between the two.
OK, thanks everybody. It helps that the steel ones are about $8 cheaper for the set too.
