does anyone know if the plastics from a newer style 400ex will fit the older style 400ex. My son's '01 could use some new fenders and I would like to update it's looks to the newer style so that it looks more like my 450r

yes, but a few extra brackets may be needed, also you may have to change the gas tank and seat
I did a simalar conversion I took a 02 honda 250 recon and put 06 honda sport trax plastic on it.. it required the sport tank and seat along with a few extra brakets.

seats and rear fenders are directly interchangable, and im pretty sure the gas tank is too. I once swapped my rear seat/fenders of my 05' 400ex with my buddy's 2000 400ex's and they snapped right into place. You'll for sure need 2005+ left and right front fenders, hood, and headlight. Most of the other stuff should be minor. There will be a hole in the 2005 right fender for the reverse switch, I'm not sure what you'll want to do there.
