How can I quite down my atc185s???

I have a 185s that a buddy gave me that I have got back up and running but the muffler has been gutted i think because this thing is dumb loud for what it is! It sounds like one of my buddies 300ex's that has a pipe on it? What are my options to get this thing quieted down since I use it for hunting some and lets just say I dont always end up places I am suppose to be.

Find a stock muffler that hasn't been gutted? My 185s has a stock muffler and it's pretty quiet. It's not deep at all. I know what you are talking about with the piped 300ex lol. I had an '01 with a DG pipe on it and that thing was obnoxious. Of course at the time I thought it was cool but I am now older and wiser . Also make sure you have the gasket between the head pipe and the muffler or the sound will come out of that connection.

Edit: Come to think of it I have a muffler from an '81 185s in my garage attic that I have no use for. The only thing is the top mounting tab is broken off. My 200x had the same thing happen and the previous owner welded a washer on as a mouting tab, and I'm thinking the same thing could be done to this one. If you are interested I can post a picture. You can have it for the price of shipping. I don't need it.

You'll need some mesh type material or sheet metal with holes or a thin wall(drilled out) tube. The tube needs to be the same diameter as the outlets on either end of the empty exhaust can. The mesh needs to be roled around a broom handle and secured to hold it's shape(tack, wire tie). The machinegun supresser is your new guts or baffel minus common exhaust packing. The length of the insert needs to be the same as the inside of the can. I recomend tacking the suspressor to the end cap...and make sure it just passes into the mid pipe 1/4"(just to stop the packing. If you have a bone yard in the area you may be able to convert a similar exh insert.

I saw a 185 once with the muffler off of a ride-on mower. It came out the center in the back. I never herd it running, but it probaly wasn't to bad.

    Ok here you go:

She's rusty and needs a new mount but you can't beat free right? The muffler on my '82 was about that rusty and I sanded on it a bit and painted it with some woodstove spray paint and it looks pretty decent.

Yeah I will measure it tonight. What year is your 185s? I see that the '81 and '82 share the same part number. 1983 is a different part number but the drawing in the online diagram makes it look like it's the exact same muffler.

Around here ive seen alot of muffler made from a drive shaft from a car. The pipe coming from the motor continued about half ways through the muffler and was closed off. Then lots of little holes drilled in it. The tip was offset and put about half ways in again caped off and little holes drilled in it too. The exhaust just ran through al the holes which made it pretty quiet. Worked pretty good too.

Its an 83, thinking it may have an aftermarket muffler on it! I will try and get some pics tonight, I am planning on getting it up on saw horses to tear the rear end down to fix the back brakes!

The muffler is about 25" long. Since you're in IL the shipping is only going to be about 5 bucks lol.
