Found my bottom and top end rusted on the project. Now I know where the gunk came from. rebuild looks like it will be 300-400 at the cheapest and there are 200es engines here for that much.
Will they fit or its it a no go?

Not sure about a 200es but I can say for sure no problem with 250es and 250sx same all the way around.

Just so you know, if you do end up going with a 250es engine, that the trannys are geared different then 250sx's. Other then that theyre the same engine.

I can buy a 250es for 100.00 and my friend will ship for like 50.00 or 80.00 ground.
300-400 into a rebuild in the engine I have on the POS now, lol
How bad of shape is the engine you have now? Whats all wrong with it? Could you throw up some pics?
Just to play devil's advocate here, unless the engine you have now is really that far gone, Id just rebuild it. Paying 300-400$ to rebuild and having a fresh motor you know is good, versus playing 150-200$ to buy and ship an engine, taking a chance on how much life it has left, and possibly spending another couple hundred to rebuild this new one. Its more like if you want to spend that money now, or later.

Bottom end is rusted, piston was rusted to cylinder and after a week almost of PB blaster it didnt budge, but when removing it broke into pieces. Crank wont budge, valves are toast, ports are rusted.
Will shift if FORCED, when in neutral there was a grinding noise, all rubber is dry rotted. Starter was crap, exhaust studs are broken and rusted.
Yeah that sounds pretty far gone!At least its good spare parts.

I dont get it either, rest of the trike cleaned up nicely, except the engine, the shock bolt and the grab bar...
Its like they poured water on those parts and the rest was fine, lol
This has been something we've discussed a few times. I ended up with 2 ES motors, one had identical tranny gears to the SX and the other did not.... Not sure if it was another year or half year? but I did count different teeth.
The differential is definitely the big gearing change, those tranny gears could simply be a hair different. The same or similar gearing ratios can be had with a 20 to 26 mate or a 24 to 30 - In other words, a differnt tooth count doesn't necessarily mean a different surface speed - I think you get what I'm saying.....
But, I definitely had some different gears in that one ES tranny.
EDIT - but to answer Twilight, yep - they are a direct bolt in motor (to my knowledge) except for the color change.

Coolness, theres hope for it yet, I found the engine was rebuilt last year and has 11 hours on it. So it should be a good one =)
Here is the spec chart taken directly from the Honda Service Manuals, the white box is 250ES and the blue box is 250SX.Same engines excepting the paint. 85sx is the same as a 85 es, and holds true for the 86 es /86sx+ 87sx/es models.
Some of the differences from year to year of the engines are crank shaft diameter and things like starter gears (drive shafts are slightly different for different years too)
Trannys are the same for sx and es in each of the model year.
Speed difference comes from the differential and tire diameter.
That is why I put a 85 sx differential in my 85 es last summer. it is actually geared higher then the sx because of the 9 inch tires found on the bigred.
I do agree with you Nick on rebuilding the current motor. You are right about knowing exactly the back ground of it then.

So with shipping (good shipping, in a wood box and packed tight) it would be around 250.
Sound good? I like that the 250es engine has a higher ratio... whoo hoo I am finally gonna get a good utility trike.
My works shock is being made right now, haha gotta love discounts.
Also put a speedo on it.
At least I know I'm not crazy!!
