rebuild the 250ES and SX motors or upgrade to a runing 300?

doing a top end rebuild will cost me about $500 for each trike. or i can get a good used 300 and do the rear swap and drop that in. What do ya'll think woudl be best? the 300 would only cost me about $350-$400 to do and that's with putting new rings and doing a basic valve job too.

I would do the 300 swap, thats something I want to do later when I finaly snag a 250es again, I think a 300 in those are awesome. And you can get 4 stroke techs 300 big bore kit witch I think can go up past 400cc's I beleive, so in theory you could possibly have a 400es big red! no that would be a monstor!

I have a 1985 Honda 250ES Big Red. Am I understanding you all right, that I 300 engine will fit easily into this trike? What 300cc engine would be the easiest?

    Thanks,

THE OLDER trx 2wd 300 motor, but it dosnt just drop in, from what Ive read you have the change the rear jackshaft assembly out to make it work, there are think a few members here that have done it already try a search.

I don't see how doing a complete top end rebuild is gonna cost you 500.00 per machine. If you were to go and order all new oem honda part's then maybe close too it ,but even then that's stretching it.

Are you doing any of the work youself or sending it out, maybe that's what i'm not getting??

Top end rebuild for my 200x was $150. $50 for the .020 over bore and a hone, and $100 for a new Wiseco. My valves and cam were good.

the $500 is the follwoing stuff
    bore/hone $60
    new piston $75 shipped
    top end kit $30 shipped
new valves (vale is burnt on 1 and other has 1 cracked) $50 shipped
valve job $150 (cnc as it's 100Xs better than lapping them)
odds and ends (hondabond, oil, papertowls, other fluids, cleaners) $50

total: ok so we are at $415. i gave some leaveway for anything else i needed so yea somewhere between $450 and $500.

a good used 300 is $250-$300 shipped no rebuild parts, only need jackshaft seals and new shaft boot and cleaners and such.

    -----------------------------
the 200 has it way easier. parts are much more avaiallbe for it than the 250cc ones. the 250x has more parts even a racing piston but not the sx or es. it's considered the odd man out.

    ----------------------------
    what year 300 engine should I consider using? i saw a 99 300 going for $159+$100 shipping

rebuild the 250ES and SX motors or upgrade to a runing 300?

hey oscar if you need the drive boot, theres a guy on ebay sellin new ones for i think 13$. i got my 300 motor for 220$ with all the wiring, exhaust, carb. but it all needs to be rebuilt like yours. you know i think a 250sx with a trx300 motor pumped up alittle bit should be able to take a stock 350x, or at least until top end i think the 350 would drive back around ya. but a sx with all that torque is going to be great.

I picked up a Late 80's or early 90's (cant remember for sure) TRX 300 just for the motor to swap into my Big Red. The quad had a bad ring and pinion but was complete and running. I kept the motor, carb, airbox, headpipe, wiring harness and all the electricals, parted out the rest of the quad and actually made money. The rear end parts go for good $. I think I got around $250 for just the rear axle, brakes, driveshaft and swingarm. The bad rear is a pretty common problem so it might be easier to look for a whole machine. That way you have all the little odds and ends. The guy I bought the quad from just couldn't grasp the idea that I was parting it out to put the motor into a trike!

That sucks since it's so much easier to get everything at 1 time. I found the quad on Ebay for $350. I'm 6'4" and 215# so the Big Red fits me good but it's definitely a little low in power stock. I am going with the 300 motor with a fresh top end, bigger carb and a cam for now. I am also changing the rear gears to a SX set for a little higher ratio. I am hoping to end up with more power and a higher top speed as well.

    aww snaps!!! :P

yea if i do the 300, i'm goign to take my time and really tweak it out and go with a weisco piston and 1mm over bore and larger vavles, THEN turbo that bad-boy! yea i said turbo.......

wanna know my expirneces with turbo charging? how about hand build 96 civic EX 1.6L singe cam car built to the gills made voer 500 tot he wlees in hp and took 2nd at it's first race. it was a natinmal competation too! i had the smallest motor competing and i even had as nad power steering in the car. it's a street car!!!!!!.
www.oscarmayer.net gives info. i sold it 5 months ago to a friend whom helped build the motor, so he's redoing the motor and tweaking it some more.

anyway, yea, turboing for me is easy. so i'm going to try turboing the 300 if I do the swap.

    If you're not joking you're insane. If a 200x beats a 250sx stock for stock, and a 200x beats a trx300 stock for stock, how will a 300sx touch a 350x... I'm confused here... I must be. Lol

A 300 has about the shortest gearing and slowest revving engine ever. It's.... Slow.
