opinions on the early (81-82) 250R's

What do you guys think overall about the 1981 to 1982 Honda 250R's? I have been thinking about getting one some time, and want to know how good they work for you. What do they top out at, and how good does the suspension and handling work out? Do you feel safe racing / jumping them? Thanx again for your thoughts.

Overall, not bad bikes. I had a 82 for a short time, and it was not a bike you could outride without suffering. The suspension is pretty limited on these bikes, but it is there and it does help. The engine is pretty mild too. They are good bikes to cruise around and have some fun on, but theres no comparison to my 85.

Its no secret the early, big wheeled R's are my favorite ATV. I can talk all day about these truely historical and amazing machines. They were the first mass produced, sport/racing purpose built ATV. They are a blast to ride and just have fun on - but a little limited for anything else. The front suspension was decent but the rears numbers were only a little better than half of what a 200X is sprung at. The best way to own a first generation "R" and be truely happy with it is to just accept them for what the are and settle for that.

The 81-82 R's were lighter, but they had one less gear than the 85-86. They were fun, snappy, but the suspension was old age.

i had an 82 that i sold last year and deeply regret it. i wouldn't jump on it but it was fun to ride in the sand.

i rode an 82 250r and it was fun. I wasnt the fastest of the R's but i think it would beat a blaster. If i could get my hands on one i would definitely buy it. Te 82's had a rear hydrolic disc brake and the 81 had a mechanical drum.
