do studded tires actually help for snow

I was thinkin about puttin studs in my tires but dont know if its really worth it.most my ridin is in the snow,will studs really do any thing in it.i will definatley lower the tire pressure cuz there pretty tight right now.Ive been ridin in 8-10 inches of powder butnot gettin much traction.another thing is the rear tires are new and i dont want to stud em if itll ruin them for summer ridin.im thinkin of puttin 3 inch spacers on each wheel for extra stability,any thoughts on that?85 big red 250 es

I was thinking the same thing, I know once you stud a tire you shouldnt unstud it though or you can risk having leaks. So if you try it out use a old set of tires.

Studs won't do that much for snow, except for hard pack. Mainly they help on ice and other slick surfaces. They are also great for getting over wet logs.

I studded the Bear Claws on the back of my machine a few months after I got them. No problems with leakage. Newer tires have more rubber on the lugs. I studded a set of old worn down spider tracs; they leaked.

I use half inch, hex head sheet metal screws. I leave mine in during summer; though quite a bit of them get thrown after a few rides. You could always remove them if you wanted.

I studded my wooley boggers with 250 screws in each tire, they do good in snow if they can dig down to ground to pull you through, unless its too deep. But If its icy snow like it is now they do amazing! Even in wet snow they dig down and pull you ahead, much better than unstudded tires.

Yup. If the ground is frozen underneath you'll notice a big difference. Wide-flat tires that tend to ride on top of the snow won't help much. Narrow diggers will benefit more from studs

i think ill give it a try,cuz usually i get stuck when the tires dig down through the snow and then spin on frozen ground leavin me stuck in my own ruts.

dont lower your air pressure pump them up to 20psi or so for ground clearance!! and studd the tires with the shorty screws they sellthemin 7/16th inch and they make a world of diffrencece if you can get the rear diff not to drag in the snow you can go anywhere.
