The electric choke works like a coolant thermostat. The little "pill" with two wires connected to it is a little heater element, driven by the stator when your machine is running. The little coil expands and contracts, opening and closing choke plunger acccording to how much it gets heated by the "pill" in there. Since it goes by temperature of the coil that moves the plunger in and out, and does not sense actual motor temperature, they dont work very well other than continuous running, especially in cold weather. If you unplug it, it is choked all the time. You can replace the choke with a cable operated plunger from some other Mikuni carbs, such as the TriZinger type. You can also get an aftermarket (Delorto)carb with a manual choke lever kit for around $100. The stock choke setup performs exteremly poor in cold weather especially. The manual Delorto resulted in immediate quick and easy starting all year round.
