						Hey Mike,
I think I contacted you about 4 years ago asking about the 86 engine color that you used to replace the original. You or someone told me that it was a Mercedes Gunmetal, and you used a GM red for the frame for the 86 ATC 250R you built for Japan, which was an awesome build, but I noticed that the gunmetal color was a bit lighter then the original with less metallic flake. I had PPG color match the original paint and they mixed my up a pint, but it came out waaay darker then anticipated. I'm on my second motor build, as well as my first from 4 years ago due to a gouged bearing retainer plate and lack of $$. But this engine color is driving me CRAZY! I'm going absolutely crazy finding an as close match to the original engine color as possible. It;s to the point where when I drive on the highway every day I look at all cars in Dark Silver or Silver Metallic Gray, then Google the models and find the colors to compare.American Honda doesn't even know the color, and I gave them the code from Darius NH-10m Dark Silver Metallic.
By no means am I trying to take away your work good sir. But if you can help me with this color matching dilemma of mine I would greatly appreciate it as I have been going crazy over it for 4 years. I would love to know what you use to replace the YM-111 Glamis gold for the swing arm, what color did you specificly use on this build here listed in this post for the engine, and what type of flat/semi gloss paint was used for the muffler?Ive used hi heat black on the muffler guard with good looking results, but not that durable. I might either black parkerize it next, or pollish it then alodine it this time before painting, rather then sandblast prime and paint.
Not to be an A** kisser, but I must say, after seeing the pics of this latest restore of the 86, you do have the very best OEM build I have ever seen on here in my opinion. It is flawless/museum perfect. I like the gold anodizing of the axles, it more permanent and the gold stands out. However I want to try to yellow chromate mine to match the original finish. But from the satin brush forks to the swinger, the engine, kicker, gear shifter, grab bar. Your work is all flawless. It matches all the pics perfectly. I think Eastwoods makes a carburetor dip that should bring the original back to its original finish, last I looked a while back. (I noticed the replacement PJ 34MM with the different fuel inlet too.)
I have also been curious if there is a way to restore the clarity back to the brake line where it meets the master cylinder? I haven't seen on of them yet on a rebuild. I wonder if anything similar to a headlight restoration solution would work on that? Anyway Ive gabbed on long enough. I am quite obsessed with the 86R. I have been ever since my older bro brought it home new in 86. Since 1989 he sold his R, and in 2006 I bought one, as well as enough parts on ebay to build another. It would be nice one ay for him and I to ride side by side on 2. If I can ever get these projects off the ground. Or the engine stand for that matter.. lol ...Thank you for any help you can give, and is greatly appreciated.
~Bobby
I can't help on the engine, but it really is hard to beat Duplicolor "Universal Gold" in afor the swingarm. The Pro-Link stickers that Harlan is producing has the gold background built into them and you can see how close the match is in this picture:

I went through about 14 shades of gold at a local autobody shop and this was closer than any of those.

this is an old post come back huh , funny i can see bits and pieces from bikes I already finished and delivered in the background , the big red you see in the background is one of the 3 i did and posted pics of ,
On the paint codes , I dont like to give out all my trade secrets but i will give you a taste of one , the gold used on the swingarm and front hub use this code its a dupont number matched from a paint plate lent to me by honda to cross there color any auto body paint supplier can mix this up Dupont Chromabase # YM035 K this is a base color and will need to be cleared after , the engine paint I will hold that secret for now its kind of harder to duplicate because of the sheen . theres my free tip of the day for ya enjoy

Hey everyone. I just got back from the DuPont Distributor. I had the counter parts guy mix me up a pint of single stage urethane, and purchased some flatterer to add to paint to attempt a low-level gloss, also got reducer, and hardener for the 86 250R Engine Color. I am going to do some "spray out's" before I hit the engine cases and cylinder with this color. I will post the results and pictures. Anyone who is interested, go to your nearest Du Pont distributor, and ask to look at a gray light metallic color chip book. Look for colors LM158IBA. I went with LM158, and matched it up with original crankcase, and paint. But take a look at colors LM156,LM157,LM158,and LM159 for comparison purposes anyways. LM158 is damn near close if not perfect match. Will see how it sprays. I am using a product called Aluthane for primer. Check that out too! Will return with results and pics.

Oh one more thing. Going to also attempt a product called All-Metal, which is an aluminum metal filler. Going to see how sandable and how well of a bond this metal filler performs on bad casting marks on the crankcases. Supposed to be designed for aluminum.
