    Kxt Vs Kx 250

I have just found a 1983 kx 250 in almost mint condition. Missing the tires. And the whole bike is stripped down. The cylinder is still nikasil coated with no marks in the cylinder. Cases are mint and with the kick starter.

Now the Kxt. Right now I need a chain and a kick start. I noticed that the kx has a longer kicker. Does anyone here run a kx kicker? Any thing I should know about using the Kx parts on the tecate?. I had used the stator from one befor but did not notice a difference in power.
Buddy wants 500$ for the bike.

Well then you're paying $500 for an engine that is presumed good. Use your kxt short kick lever, kxt primary gear and kxt clutch basket. Kinda steep imo, so remind your friend again, that you're really only buying the engine for that $$$$$$$$....

I've got a kx kicker on my KXT motor. It works fine, but I had to take a small notch out of the plastic for clearance.

That is the problem. I no longer have a kicker. Does anyone have both bikes and interchanges motors? I want to get into dirt bikes and I think this might help me out. Or I have another engine to put in the 84 frame.

Well This is the state my shed, Tecate and my new to me 1983 kx 250. Did end up paying the 500 but it is just mint. Here are 2 pics I took the night I got it.

The super trick nikal plated dual exhaust ported kx cylinder. There is a little bit of light rust near the top of the crome plate in the cylinder. SOS pad?

My father even thinks I should fix it up. Good thing I bought alot of interchangeable parts for the tecate and kx.

Needs swing arm/both front and rear wheel bearrings.
Mabey a piston but would like to put rings in it.

So are going to put the KX back together or just use the parts for the Tecate?

Decent looking basket case. I had an 84 KX I parted out and just ended up taking the frame, swingarm and dogbone to the scrap yard. I have the high flite seat, used and new rear sprockets, front forks, fenders/ disc guard, triples, and airbox (I think), along with some other small left overs like motors mounts, axles, ect.

Never seen an 83 to compare to the 84.

Nah. The bike dosent look that mint in the pics but it is sweet. Plus I want to learn to ride 2 wheels. Do you need to break in a nika cylinder? And what about drilling holes in the piston?

drill 2 small holes in line with the exhaust port divider if there are none on the piston.

    As per Wiseco Piston's recommendations:

    1. Temporarily install piston on connecting rod without rings. Piston pin circlips should not be used.

    2. Fit cylinder over piston and on it's normal position on the crankcase.

    3. Turn over the engine & bring the top edge of the piston just above the top edge of the exhaust port, reach on through the exhaust port with sharp scribe & lightly scratch vertically, on to the piston, the outline of the exhaust port bridge.

    4. Remove cylinder & piston.

    5. Locate & drill exactly in the center, between the two scribed lines, two 1/16" lubrication holes at the following heights measured down from the bottom edge of the bottom ring groove:
    1st hole: 5/16" down
2nd hole: 3/8" below the first hole

    6. Remove all burrs from the two holes. Piston is now ready to install.

Yeah The original kawasaki piston has 1 hole. And it looks like there was some mild heat around the hole. So 2 should have been drilled.

I have some old instructions from Wiseco that said you should drill 3 holes. All of the latest pistons from Wiseco come with directions for 2 holes, as I described above. Also, some of the old pistons from Wiseco used to come pre-drilled.

Yeah till they stoped making the tecate piston. Bad news yesterday. I snaped my near mint kick starter right off. 5th kick. And I didnt even get it started with the kicker. Had to push start.

You broke the kicker shaft or the lever itself. Steel or aluminum?
